The Sherlock Holmes stories have their fill of codes and cyphers. "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" is probably the most easily recognized and well-known. But the clever spacing of words within a bit of nonsense writing in "The Gloria Scott" was an early code that Holmes cracked, while recuperating at the country home of his university friend Victor Trevor.

In "The Reigate Squire," we find another type of word spacing — one requiring two writers, the first of whom would leave blanks and the second who would fill those blanks with words. Ultimately, it was the handwriting and spacing that gave them away.

Young Wiggins is trying his hand at cracking a code at Baker Street Elementary. Will he achieve Sherlock Holmes-level status, or will he come up blank? The answer awaits...

The above image may be familiar to long-time Sherlockians. Is is the Folio Society's box set of the complete Sherlock Holmes stories, first published in 1993. Divided into two cases — one containing the four novels, the other the containing the five collections of short stories — the spines of the volumes form a profile of Watson and Holmes, respectively.

[Editor's note: when the Baker Street Journal went from stapled to perfect-bound we advocated creating a silhouette over the course of multiple volumes, thus ensuring that those who wished to display a similar illustration on their shelves would continue to subscribe, lest the image be broken. Alas, our suggestion was turned down.]

The Folio Society is preparing to release a new set of Sherlock Holmes stories and late last year put out a call for illustrations to accompany it, in conjunction with House of Illustration, as part of its eighth annual Book Illustration Competition (#BIC2018). There were 450 entrants, and 24 have been selected to move to the longlist. Entries came from 48 countries including the USA, Singapore, Iran, Spain and Guatemala, and over 35% of them were from students.

The winner will receive a prestigious £5,000 commission from The Folio Society to illustrate their new edition of The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. The five other entrants who complete the shortlist will each receive £500. As part of the Book Illustration Competition’s commitment to nurturing new talent, the judging panel ensures that students form part of the shortlist.

The awards will be announced and presented by Helen Dorey, BSI ("Helen Stoner") at an exclusive ceremony at House of illustration on February 20, 2018.

If you frequent this site, you're certainly familiar with our 10 year-long show, in which we interview notable Sherlockians who are doing their part to keep the memory of Sherlock Holmes green. I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere has evolved over that decade, but we're on a steady cadence of long-form interviews on the 15th and 30th of every month.

Meanwhile, over on Trifles, we're engaged in something different: we have short discussions of about 15 minutes in length every week in which we talk about one or two issues that we've noticed within the Sherlock Holmes stories. It's an approach that we hope brings more people into our fold who are new to Sherlock Holmes and are fascinated with the details within the story, or who may have some questions about what they read.

And now, on with the recap of our January shows.

January Update

A new year marked a new season, and by popular demand, we're going to start covering some of the topics we mention in each show's introduction. Did you know that each introduction is different? We began with Compounding a Felony in which we discuss what happened when Holmes let perpetrators go free.

Beginning with Episode 54, we're instituting a new monthly feature. "Inside 221B" looks at some of the physical objects we find in the flat at 221B Baker Street. We begin this series by looking On the Sideboard and pondering its purpose.

And then it's off to another monthly feature in which we focus on some aspects of the cases that didn't make it to the public and that Watson kept in his famous tin box. "Unpublished Cases" begins with an investigation into Weird Animals.

Finally, we found our way home in Episode 56 as we talked about everyone's favorite landlady (not housekeeper) and potential relatives - including her non-existent husband - in The Hudsons.

Here's an Idea

Why not take along an episode of Trifles to your next scion society meeting? Or use one of the topics as a basis of discussion yourselves. Go ahead, see what it sparks. And by all means, let your fellow Sherlockians know about the show. If you like what you hear, please subscribe to Trifles via the podcast provider of your choice, or to the email updates.
What Was Jefferson Hope Singing in A Study in Scarlet?

"Singing snatches of songs and gibbering" [DEVI]

Jefferson Hope, the villain or possibly hero of A Study in Scarlet, had to pretend to be drunk when he encountered a policeman right after killing Enoch J. Drebber. Constable John Rance told Holmes and Watson

"He was at the gate when I came out, a-leanin' up ag'in the railings, and a-singin' at the pitch o' his lungs about Columbine's New-fangled Banner, or some such stuff."

A perfectly reasonable reaction to that statement would be skepticism: "new-fangled" banner? Really? It sounds like a twentieth-century word, the sort of word your grandfather would have used about automatic transmissions. ("These modern gramophones are a remarkable invention," Sherlock Holmes said in, probably, 1903.) Indeed, my heart leaped briefly as I wondered whether Arthur Conan Doyle had invented it. He did, after all, invent a number of words, or new meanings for words, including "snick," [NAVA] "grimpen," [HOUN] and "wonder-woman." [ILLU]

But it is not so. The Oxford English Dictionary, which had advanced no farther than the letter B when A Study in Scarlet appeared in 1887, got to the N-words by 1907, and when the entry for "newfangled" (no hyphen, please) appeared, it adduced many uses of the word dating back literally hundreds of years. "Let vs se and examine more of this newfangled philosophye," one scholar wrote in, apparently, 1531. A 1603 translation of Montaigne's essays referred to "new-fangled and vicious introductions." Shakespeare also uses it.

In any case, Jefferson Hope is not likely to have been singing about newfangled anythings. To a modern ear, the song John Rance heard was self-evidently about a star-spangled, not new-fangled, banner, and one thinks of the song by that name that became the national anthem of the United States in 1931, a mere fifty years after the events in Lauriston Gardens. True enough, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written in 1814, reflecting events in the then recent unpleasantness known as the War of 1812, and it could well have been known and sung in 1881, the year A Study in Scarlet apparently takes place. Jefferson Hope was, almost ostentatiously, an American.

But "Columbine" still needs some explaining. The editor of the relevant volume in the Oxford Sherlock Holmes series says in an endnote that Hope "automatically sings American patriotic songs ('Hail, Columbia!' and 'The Star-spangled Banner')." Maybe so, but "Columbia" is not "Columbine", not quite.

"Columbine" would be a more familiar name than "Columbia" to the ear of London constable John Rance. Columbine is the consort of Harlequin in British pantomime, which is not "pantomime" as the rest of the world knows it, but a form of down-market comedy embracing the Harlequinade, which is derived from the Italian commedia dell'arte. The Harlequinade involves love scenes and other clichés including a slapstick police chase which may be the original of the Keystone Cops. (Things are getting complicated, even without bringing in the currently popular figure Harley Quinn, who is associated with the Joker, who has battled Sherlock Holmes in a classic 1976 comic book and in other media — oh, whatever.)

"Hail, Columbia" dates from 1789 and is not now familiar unless you're the Vice President of the United States, whose official tune it is. Rather better known, and possibly a more likely choice for Jefferson Hope in his improvisation, is the song "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean." Written in 1843, it was (along with "Hail, Columbia") a candidate for the role of national anthem until "The Star-Spangled Banner" won out in 1931. One of its stanzas begins thus:

The star spangled banner bring hither,
O'er Columbia's true sons let it wave.

And if that isn't "Columbine's new-fangled banner", well, I don't know what is.

When we say "I hear of Sherlock everywhere," we're not simply quoting Mycroft Holmes. Nor are we referring to our twice-monthly show. We mean that because we're so connected with the sixty original stories that Sherlock Holmes seems to be in just about everything we come across.

This of course extends to film, as Sherlock Holmes holds a Guinness World Record for being the most portrayed literary human character in film. And one would think that Dr. Watson would be right along side him in that regard, since they most often appear together.

Over the course of more than 100 years in film and television, the two have emblazoned themselves in our hearts and in our minds, from William Gillette to Benedict Cumberbatch and many other actors in between.

This lovely montage captures their unique friendship and professional association:

At the start of the First World War, there was a mass outpouring of sympathy and charity for the men fighting for Britain. The Royal family were not immune to this and in October 1914, the young Princess Mary, inspired by her visits to hospitals for injured soldiers, wanted to show her support. So she publicly announced her intentions to provide a gift for ‘every sailor afloat and every soldier at the front’. Such decorative boxes were fine for enlisted men, but what about the spies? They couldn't be seen with readily identifiable hardware.

Ross Davies, BSI ("The Temple") joined us to talk about just what these boxes were and how they may have included an item or two related to Sherlock Holmes. But digging a little deeper, he discovered the possibility that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and publisher George H. Doran may have been collaborating to provide propaganda to the troops.
This, as well as the next major BSI Excursion, our couplet competition, and more await in the latest episode of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere.

We know the main players in the Sherlock Holmes stories by the names that are familiar to many people throughout the world. But there has been some confusion along the way.

Sherlock Holmes was originally intended to be called "Sherrinford" and John Watson was originally cast as "Ormond Sacker." But of course Mrs. Watson had other ideas about what he should be called. Conan Doyle went to great lengths in his selection of names (not quite so far as Charles Dickens), and Don Redmond, BSI ("Good Old Index") even penned A Study in Sources to trace a few origins.

Whether we know them by first or last name, by an American or British pronunciation (or spelling), or by their intended versus given names, they are, to us, all the same. No doubt the halls of Baker Street Elementary will be one day buzzing with the study of Romeo and Juliet, in which Juliet wonders:

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

It's that time of year when the Mystery Writers of America makes its annual announcement about the Nominees for the Edgar Allan Poe Awards, honoring the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction and television published or produced in 2017. This year marks the 209th anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe.

The Edgar® Awards will be presented to the winners at at a gala banquet on April 26, 2018 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City.

Aside from the general interest in the mystery genre, our interest in the nominees steers toward...you guessed it — those who are affiliated in some way with Sherlock Holmes. This year, there are four publications in three categories. Let's investigate.

Best Short Story

“Chin Yong-Yun Stays at Home” – Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine
by S.J. Rozan. While this story isn't Sherlockian in nature, S.J. Rozan is a member of the Baker Street Irregulars and her investiture is "The Imperial Palace of Peking."

Best Fact Crime

Mrs. Sherlock Holmes: The True Story of New York City's Greatest Female Detective and the1917 Missing Girl Case that Captivated a Nation by Brad Ricca. We just happened to see this at a local bookstore a couple of weeks ago, and were fascinated by the narrative biography of this New York socialite-turned-crimefighter.

Best Critical/Biographical

This is an interesting category as it contains two separate Sherlock Holmes-related books, and we can honestly say that each is supremely worthy of the award. And we've interviewed both authors for our show.

The first is Arthur and Sherlock: Conan Doyle and the Creation of Holmes by Michael Sims. It's not just any old biography of Arthur Conan Doyle; it's a well-researched and an even better-told story than the others. And we spoke with Michael about it on Episode 117.

And the other is From Holmes to Sherlock: The Story of the Men and Women Who Created an Icon by Mattias Boström. This is a true masterpiece that captures the essence of why it is that we do what we do here. We interviewed Mattias for Episode 127.

The entire lineup of Nominees is worthy of your time. But if you're going to put your money on a winner, we think any of the above three would be an excellent choice. Good luck to all of the authors!
The Real House that Inspired Birlstone Manor

"the ancient Manor House of Birlstone" [VALL]

If you've ever visited Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent, it's likely that you've heard of Groombridge Place. It's an estate that dates from 1230, with the current manor house having been built in 1662.

One of the most notable features of the house is that it's moated. If that sounds familiar, then you may recall a moated house that played a part in one of the original 60 Sherlock Holmes stories: the moated house of Birlstone in The Valley of Fear.

[Note: this should not be confused with Hurlstone, in "The Musgrave Ritual." We recognize that this may occur occasionally because the names of the manor houses rhyme, and because the filming location for the Granada version of "The Musgrave Ritual" with Jeremy Brett was at Baddesley Clinton, another 500 year-old moated house.]

However, as with many locations, homes and names used in the Canon, there has been historic speculation about exactly which stately home inspired Birlstone in the 1914 novel. And as with many things in the Sherlockian world, it has been debated as well. With this entry, we'd like to bring you into a battle of titans and show how the definitive inspiration was debunked with some fairly incontrovertible proof.

"A Case of Identity"

Aside from the fascinating history of Groombridge Place, the property should be of interest to Sherlockians because of its associations with the Manor House of Birlstone in The Valley of Fear. But first a little history in the identification.

H.W. Bell, BSI ("The Valley of Fear") was one of the early and great Sherlockian scholars and Baker Street Irregulars. Bell was a Bostonian (being an inveterate member of The Speckled Band of Boston) who carried on correspondence with a number of other Sherlockians, including Dorothy Sayers and Edgar Smith. Smith was impressed with Bell's Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: The Chronology of Their Adventures (1932) and he included Bell's "Three Identifications" in Profile by Gaslight in 1944. It was in this monograph that Bell determined that Birlstone Manor was based on The Moated House at Brambletye.

In 1945, the year after the BSI began issuing investitures, Bell received his — "The Valley of Fear" — specifically to recognize his scholarship in this area (and it should be noted that the four novels — STUD, SIGN, HOUN and VALL — were considered uber-investitures and were given to some of the earliest and most significant Sherlockians of the day: Vincent Starrett, Christopher Morley, Edgar Smith and Bell, respectively).
Keddie had with him three leaves from a second printing of The Valley of Fear, published in 1915 — one of which included this inscription from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself:
That settled the matter nicely.

But what of the "old house" itself? Here we have the description of Birlstone Manor from The Valley of Fear:

About half a mile from the town, standing in an old park famous for its huge beech trees, is the ancient Manor House of Birlstone. Part of this venerable building dates back to the time of the first Crusade, when Hugo de Capus built a fortalice in the centre of the estate, which had been granted to him by the Red King. This was destroyed by fire in 1543, and some of its smoke-blackened corner-stones were used when, in Jacobean times, a brick country house rose upon the ruins of the feudal castle. The Manor House, with its many gables and its small, diamond-paned windows, was still much as the builder had left it in the early seventeenth century. Of the double moats which had guarded its more warlike predecessor the outer had been allowed to dry up, and served the humble function of a kitchen garden. The inner one was still there, and lay, forty feet in breadth, though now only a few feet in depth, round the whole house. A small stream fed it and continued beyond it, so that the sheet of water, though turbid, was never ditch-like or unhealthy. The ground floor windows were within a foot of the surface of the water. The only approach to the house was over a drawbridge, the chains and windlass of which had long been rusted and broken. The latest tenants of the Manor House had, however, with characteristic energy, set this right, and the drawbridge was not only capable of being raised, but actually was raised every evening and lowered every morning. By thus renewing the custom of the old feudal days the Manor House was converted into an island during the night - a fact which had a very direct bearing upon the mystery which was soon to engage the attention of all England."

We've all had experience listening to Sherlock Holmes audio programs. Right? RIGHT??

And just as we have favorite screen adaptations, we also have our special audio heroes as well. Rathbone and Bruce, Gielgud and Richardson, Shelley and Hobbes, Merrison and Williams... they all bring to mind a feeling of nostalgia for the stories.

But there are many original episodes that have gone missing. And our guest, Ian Dickerson, has managed to track down some of the original scripts of the Rathbone/Bruce radio series that were lost to the ages. Between the Edith Meiser era and the Anthony Boucher / Denis Green era, there was another writer — one known more for his stories about Simon Templar than anything else. And Ian managed to unearth them and put together a fine book on the topic.
