As the seasons change from summer to autumn, it is that time of year every child dreads - the end of summer and the start of the school year. While students begin their study of such subjects as Literature, Physics, and Algebra, it is good to note that a good number of pupils will also be delving into the extremely important study of Sherlock Holmes. Many teachers (myself included) teach their students the Sherlockian method of deduction as well as an appreciation of Sherlock Holmes stories from the original canon and also pastiches.<br />
<br />
Each year one such teacher is honored by <a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/" target="_blank">The Beacon Society</a>, a scion society of the Baker Street Irregulars which provides educators with grants and awards to help bring Sherlock Holmes into the classroom, with <a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/index.php/awards/award-winners/beacon-award" target="_blank">the Beacon Award</a>. This award is, according to the Beacon Society website, "recognition for exemplary educational experiences and other significant activities exposing young people to the Sherlock Holmes stories." Only one educator receives a Beacon Award each year. <br />

To tell us a bit about the Beacon Award and about her students' incredible Sherlockian educational experiences I interviewed Shannon Carlisle, the 2013 award recipient.<br />

<b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere: In 2013, you won the Beacon Award, an award of recognition for exemplary educational experiences and other significant activities exposing young people to the Sherlock Holmes stories. What do you do in your classroom to expose your students to the great detective?</b></h4>
<span style="white-space: pre;"><b>Shannon Carlisle (SC):</b> </span>My classrooms have always had themes. For years, my 4th grade classroom was “the garden.” I was the “kid gardener” charged with nurturing the “seeds,” or students, I had been given. Five years ago, when I became our school’s accelerated learning teacher, I wanted a classroom theme that would inspire and embrace my new learners. I had earned my master’s degree in gifted education early on in my career. I was trained to meet the needs of my advanced learners. However, year after year, I knew some of my advanced students were not making optimal growth.<br />
<br />
After reflection, I concluded that they did not always possess the mindset and skills necessary for growth. Therefore, my classroom became 221B Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes’s home, because I felt that my students could relate to/learn from Sherlock Holmes’s character traits, observational skills, capacity for critical thought, and inductive/deductive reasoning. Over the past 5 years, the Sherlockian theme has encouraged students to employ the mindset and skills needed for growth, provided an engaging framework for learning, and supported students in their attempts to be productive citizens.<br />

As the self-proclaimed “Chief Sherlockian,” I adorned the hallway with Baker Street signs and decorated my classroom door to resemble the front door of the great detective. Sherlock Holmes, Victorian London, and the British culture is woven throughout our day. To take attendance, each student recites a portion of Russell McLaughlin’s poem, “How can you get to Baker Street?” If there is a break in recitation, someone is absent. When I state, “keep calm and carry on,” my students know to line up. <br />

<b>IHOSE: Why do you feel it is important for students to know the Sherlock Holmes character and his methods of deduction?  Why is Holmes relevant to students today?</b></h4>
<span style="white-space: pre;"><b>SC: </b></span>During the first week of school, I invite all 4th grade students to participate in Sherlockian Training to learn how to think and act like the great detective. To begin their week long training, the students are introduced to Holmes’s observational skills in "A Scandal in Bohemia." I refer to Holmes’s words to Watson, “you see, but you do not observe,” often throughout the week. Then, the students use their observational skills to examine a crime scene and use their deductive reasoning to draw conclusions about the crime after listening to suspect interviews and analyzing forensics lab results.<br />
<br />
By the end of the training, the students are taught to be observant, active participants in their learning, and critical thinkers… just like the great detective. Throughout the school year, when they employ these traits, the students move up through the 17 Scotland Yard Police Ranks of 1895 — from constable to commissioner. For the past two years, our school resource officer has participated in the trainings and has presented students with shillings he purchased from London. He has presented over 150 shillings to date. Then, throughout the rest of the school year, my advanced reading/language arts students complete a more in depth study of Sherlock Holmes’ character, read the abridged stories and pastiches, and conduct research related to the canon.<br />

Although I teach advanced learners, they are not able to access the Canon as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote it. Often the vocabulary is too advanced and/or the content is inappropriate. Therefore, I rely on abridged versions of the Canon or pastiches. Every December, my 2nd-4th graders study "The Blue Carbuncle." The learning activities vary by grade level. While studying this adventure, the students might complete a visual literacy task of the Covent Garden Market, sequence the story using Sidney Paget’s illustrations and Chris Schweizer’s paper dolls, and/or compete Dr. Marino Alvarez’s cryptograph. Top performing students on a modified William Dorn quiz are awarded prizes donated by Mrs. Francine Kitts and Mr. Al Gregory.<br />

Each year, my 3rd-4th graders analyze "The Red-Headed League." Again, the learning activities vary by grade level. The students might complete a visual literacy task of Fleet Street, read the graphic novel by Murray Shaw and  M.J. Cosson, and/or perform the play adapted by Dr. Alvarez. Again, top performing students on a modified William Dorn quiz are awarded prizes donated by Mrs. Francine Kitts and Mr. Al Gregory. <br />

Additionally, my 3rd and 4th graders read the "The Six Napoleons." After reading the adventure this year, my 3rd graders created analogies comparing "The Blue Carbuncle" and "The Six Napoleons" after noting the similarities between the two adventures.<br />
<br />
"Put the pearl in the safe," says Holmes to Watson at the conclusion of this adventure.<br />
<br />
During the spring of 2013, a group of 4th grade boys completed research to determine the type and owner of the safe. Their research questions focused their investigation on the owner of the safe, the date it was purchased, style (freestanding or built into the wall), and brand. By the time they concluded their research, they had had conversations with Roger Johnson in Great Britain and the president of the Empire Safe Co. in NYC. They concluded Dr. Watson owned an 1882 Chubb’s safe No. 33.<br />
<br />
They had completed their research so skillfully that their work was embraced by the Sherlockian community. It was published electronically to over 840 Sherlockians worldwide. The Sherlockian E-Times published an extra edition of their electronic newsletter just to share this research- something that had only been done four times in 20 years.<br />
<br />
The research was also published in <a href="http://ash-nyc.com/" target="_blank">The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes</a> quarterly, <i>The Serpentine Muse</i>. The students were recognized by our school board and presented with certificates of merit by our district’s superintendent of schools. Our county’s newspaper reported on the event by publishing an online article and photo detailing the students’ research and its impact on the Sherlockian community. Because of this experience, the students saw themselves as contributors to society. The parents said that the experience enhanced the boys’ perception of themselves as viable sources of knowledge thus increasing their self-concept.<br />
<br />
During the course of their research, one of the boys mentioned that he wanted the research to be completed so well that he would be welcomed into our local scion, <a href="http://www.nashvillescholars.net/" target="_blank">The Nashville Scholars of the Three Pipe Problem</a>. In January 2014, he became the youngest member to be invested into our group. He requested that his investiture name be “The Red-Headed League” because it was the first Sherlock Holmes adventure he had ever read. Recently, his father formally joined the scion. His investiture name is “John Clayton,” the cab driver in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, because he provides transportation for his son to our monthly meetings.<br />

In addition to the adventures, the 3rd graders read <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=the+sherlock+files+tracy" target="_blank">The Sherlock Files</a></i>. In the pastiches, written Tracy Barrett, the great-great-great-grandchildren of Sherlock Holmes inherit his unsolved casebook. They prove to be observant, persistent, and possess fine powers of reasoning. The plots, in the 4 book series, are dotted with references to the Canon — Baker Street Irregulars, shillings, 221B, Watson, lion’s mane, “when you have excluded the impossible…”<br />
<br />
In the first novel, Xena and Xander Holmes are given a note stating, “Please allow the SPFD (Society for the Preservation of Famous Detectives) to welcome you more formally. Go to the Dancing Men and ask for a saucer of milk for your snake. Then all will be revealed.” This past year, my students created The S.P.F.D Club for those who have read all 4 books in the series.<br />

In the pastiche, a little girl claims that her snowman has gone missing. Although Dr. Watson is inclined to tell her the truth, Holmes helps her investigate its disappearance.<br />

Last year, my 4th grade students created The Sherlock Holmes Museum for the Young, Curious, and Observant Mind in our classroom. The museum displays donated artifacts along with interpretive labels. As we prepared for the creation, we researched museum types and determined that the museum would be object-centered, client-centered, and narrative. They learned that museum visitors expect interpretive labels but only read approximately 50% of them. They also learned that the interpretive labels should be layered for the paddlers (those who will only read the first few sentences), swimmers (those who will read approximately half of the text), and the divers (those who will read the entire label).<br />

At the entrance to the museum, the students added the following disclaimer: “If you are a true Sherlockian, you believe that Sherlock Holmes is still alive, retired (for the most part), and living in South Downs Sussex; and John H. Watson wrote the Canon and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was his literary agent.”<br />
<br />
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the museum was dedicated to Dr. Alvarez and Mrs. Francine Kitts for their support of our Sherlockian endeavors. Dr. Alvarez and his wife were present for the event. Richard and Francine Kitts attended by Skype. After the event, the Kitts took my students on a virtual tour of the Sherlockian artifacts in their home. Not only did this year's 4th graders add new artifacts with interpretive labels, but they also added a new section — Singular Sherlockians. In this area of the museum, students will highlight distinguished Sherlockians. Al Gregory was the first notable Sherlockian to be inducted.<br />

I always encourage my students to be productive citizens- now and in the future. Twice, The Serpentine Muse has published my students’ work. In addition to the boys’ safe research, last year’s third graders persuaded Ms. Susan Z. Diamond, co-editor of the quarterly publication, to publish their Blue Carbuncle themed poem.  In their email to her, they stated, “Because <i>The Serpentine Muse</i> is written to ‘amuse and intrigue the discerning reader,’ we would encourage you to consider our poem for publication in the quarterly journal. Not only would it encourage your readers to read or reread the adventure, but it may also inspire them to write poems of their own.”<br />

<b>IHOSE: Tell us how you were nominated for the Beacon Award.  Also, what was it like to win and receive the award?</b></h4>
<b>SC:</b> In January of 2013, I was awarded The Beacon Award. My assistant principal had nominated me for the award. Although I could not attend the annual Beacon Society meeting to accept the award, Dr. Alvarez returned from NYC to tell me all about the event. In March of 2013, I was invested into my local Sherlockian scion society with the canonical name “221B Baker Street.”<br />
<br />
As a life-long learner, I enjoy attending and participating in the monthly scion meetings. My increased knowledge/understanding the detective and his stories aids in my development of exceptional learning activities in my classroom. Members of the group have supported my efforts by donating extra copies of the canon or have been guest speakers. Dr. Alvarez visits my classroom multiple times each year.<br />

He is a former education professor and has taught me how to create visual literacy tasks to help students understand the settings of the stories better. In April 2014 and 2015, he organized a panel of educators, including myself, to discuss “Teaching Sherlock Holmes” at 221B Con in Atlanta. During my presentations, I shared my classroom theme and goals, the learning activities I implement throughout the school year, and effective resources to use with elementary students.<br />

<b>IHOSE: If you were stranded on a desert island with just one Sherlock Holmes story, which would it be and why?</b></h4>
<span style="white-space: pre;"><b>SC:</b> </span>If I were to be stranded on a deserted island with just one Sherlock Holmes story, I would choose to be stranded with "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle." It is the story I spend the most time with in the classroom. With the students, I have enjoyed studying its vocabulary, “It’s a bonny thing,” and tracing the journey of the Blue Carbuncle from the Hotel Cosmopolitan to 221B Baker Street. Also, I enjoy reading their persuasive essays encouraging me to believe that Sherlock Holmes  should or should not have let Ryder go free at the end of the adventure. In addition, every December, Dr. Alvarez visits my classroom to help us analyze the plot of “the whimsical, little incident.”  We enjoy attempting his cryptograph.<br />

<b>IHOSE: Any last thoughts?</b></h4>
<b>SC: </b>I am very grateful to the Sherlockian community for their support. In particular, I am very thankful for The Beacon Society. In education, I am a member of multiple professional learning communities (PLCs). The Beacon Society is my Sherlockian PLC. This past January, I was invited to participate in the birthday weekend events in NYC. During the birthday weekend, I had the opportunity to thank in person the Sherlockians that have supported 221B Baker Street at Moore Elementary. Again, I am very grateful for their support.<br />

<b>Shannon Carlisle </b>is a 19 year teaching veteran who is the accelerated learning teacher at Moore Elementary in Franklin, Tenn. Shannon earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in special education: teaching the gifted and talented from the University of Northern Colorado. In 2013, she was selected by the Tennessee Department of Education as the PreK-4th Regional Winner of the Tennessee Teacher of the Year competition. Additionally, she was runner-up in the Best Public School Teacher section of Nashville Scene’s 2012 Best of Nashville contest. In 2014, she earned National Board Certification as an exceptional needs specialist. Her husband is wonderfully supportive of her Sherlockian endeavors, and she is raising her three children to appreciate the great detective.<br />

In 2006, I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/11/was-in-city-in-russia-gold_20.html#.V45wKWgrI2x" target="_blank">reported on the plans to create astatue</a> of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson (who are perennially popular in
Russia) in the Russian capital of Moscow. <o:p></o:p></div>

Having recently returned from a trip to Moscow, much of
which was filled with visits to various literary monuments—of which Moscow is
full—I thought it would not be out of place to report on the aforementioned
Holmes and Watson statue, which now graces the embankment in front of the
British Embassy. I visited the statue on my first trip to Moscow, two years
ago, trekking through the 80-degree Moscow heat to a secluded embankment in an
otherwise unremarkable district to find the statue in question, and I must say
that the experience is slightly magical.<o:p></o:p></div>

Back when the statue was only planned, many different
locations were considered for it, with the Smolenskaya embankment (where the
embassy is located) finally chosen. Yet the figures of Holmes and Watson were
not based on Sidney Paget’s illustrations or Jeremy Brett’s depiction; rather,
they were in the form of Vitaly Solomin and Vasily Livanov, who incarnated
Holmes and Watson in an excellent and still-popular Soviet adaptation of the
Canon.</div>

This is part of what makes the statue magical: this
cross-cultural connection. The Sherlock Holmes stories remain incredibly popular in Russian-speaking countries, while Livanov was
acknowledged to be the best incarnation of Sherlock Holmes by Queen Elizabeth
herself, and became an honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire. At
the unveiling of the statue in 2007, the actor himself noted this
cross-cultural connection:<br />

“Anyone can destroy a monument,” he said, drawing on a
cigarette. “But to unite two cultures, two nations, with one idea – that is not

As the <a href="http://www.kp.ru/daily/23895/66683/">Russian newspaper <i>Komsomolskaya Pravda</i></a> reported,
Livanov seated himself on the bench between his bronze self and Doctor Watson
and warned those present:</div>

<br />Not having heard Livanov’s warning prior to my visit, it appears I have managed to both embroil myself in a criminal undertaking and solve any unexplained mystery, as I took a whiff of Holmes’ pipe and looked over Watson’s shoulder at his notebook:</div>

Sherlock is always a draw at Comic-Con. Especially when there's a new series on the way. In this case, Series 4 is due in 2017 (no specific date yet), so fans and cast members alike gathered at the San Diego event to pick up as many hints as possible about the new shows.<br />
<br />
We already know that, like in previous series, there will be three episodes. You may recall when we spoke with <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose86" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue in Episode 86</a> prior to "The Abominable Bride," they mentioned how each episode is akin to shooting a feature-length film.<br />
<br />
But what else have we been able to glean over the last few months about the next series?<br />
<br />
Well, we know that <a href="http://www.empireonline.com/people/benedict-cumberbatch/toby-jones-will-sherlock-new-villain/" target="_blank">Toby Jones is joining the cast</a> as none other than <a href="http://www.denofgeek.com/uk/tv/sherlock/34751/sherlock-series-4-amanda-abbington-posts-last-day-image" target="_blank">the villain Culverton Smith</a>, who appeared in "The Adventure of the Dying Detective" in the original stories.<br />
<br />
And Moffat, Vertue and Mark Gatiss revealed their now traditional "three words" to describe the episodes: Thatcher. Smith. Sherrinford. What do these names tell us?<br />
<br />
We've already established the significance of Smith above. But unlike Smith, the other two names are not Canonical — that is, they never appeared in the original Sherlock Holmes stories.<br />
<br />
However, Sherrinford is significant because it is part of some of the most core and accepted Sherlockian scholarship. In <i>Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street</i>, a biography of Sherlock Holmes by William S. Baring-Gould, BSI ("The <i>Gloria Scott</i>"), the author indicated that Holmes's parents were Siger Holmes and Violet Sherrinford, and that there were <b><i>three</i></b> Holmes brothers: Sherlock (the youngest), Mycroft, and the eldest brother, Sherrinford. That would seem to be where the hint is pointing, but we'll have to wait to see if a third Holmes brother is brought into the series this time around.<br />
<br />
Thatcher is a bit more problematic, however. There is no such name in the Canon. Offhand, it brings up two alternatives in our mind:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Some reference to Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of England. Given Mycroft's connection to the government, it's not completely out of the question.</li>
<li>A long-lost love interest for Sherlock, as Becky Thatcher was the paramour of Tom Sawyer in Mark Twain's book by the same name.</li>
</ol>

One thing that was more apparent about the upcoming season, thanks to <a href="https://youtu.be/xj6c_nXsxW8" target="_blank">the trailer provided by PBS Masterpiece</a>: the dark themes throughout. We're treated to a glimpse of the ever-present Moriarty, the nefarious Smith, an unshaven Sherlock, a group of masked nurses (evidently shielding themselves from some infectious disease), explosions, gunplay, hand-to-hand combat and more.<br />

The book is part of the <a href="http://us.macmillan.com/series/thebakerstreetletters" target="_blank"><i>Baker Street Letters</i></a> series involving brothers Nigel and Reggie Robertson who have offices at 221B Baker Street and spend some of their time answering letters addressed to Sherlock Holmes. Nigel and Reggie are a legal team with Reggie as the barrister and Nigel as the solicitor.<br />
<br />
This book focuses on Nigel because Reggie is away on his honeymoon and is only mentioned in the book. This is part of Nigel's recent string of bad luck. While his happy brother is away enjoying marital bliss, Nigel has returned to London from Los Angeles where the love of his life, Mara Ramirez, has split with him.<br />
<br />
A big distraction comes to Nigel in the form of a jury summons. What could be the crime of the century has occurred. Rory McSweeney, a national hero who has led England's cricket team to the international championship has been accused of murdering his wife by beating her to death with his cricket bat. Nigel's law office has received two different summons.  One is addressed to him, the other is addressed to Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
As Nigel ends up as an alternate on the jury, the real mystery starts to develop.  While hearing the case of Mr. McSweeney, many of the jurors start having accidents, and one by one, they need to be replaced by the alternates. Who is responsible for these accidents?  And what is the motivation?<br />
<br />
This book is a fun summer read. Nigel is a great sympathetic character. He is a nice guy who comes across as shy and kind, and throughout the book you can't help feeling bad for him, having to deal with being on a jury which he has no desire to be on, trying to solve the mystery while dealing with the other kooky jurors, and also running the law office while his brother is away.<br />
<br />
My only complaint with the book is that it is described as a great read for fans of Sherlock Holmes and it is no such thing. The book has a sort of Sherlock Holmes character who says some Sherlock Holmes quotes, but that connection to the consulting detective is tenuous at best. This is more of a book for fans of Agatha Christie than fans of Doyle, and that is not a criticism, just a fact. I wouldn't want someone reading this book expecting a Sherlock Holmes style mystery to be disappointed.  This book is too good for any form of disappointment. <br />

Our own online Sherlockian adventure extends to the early 1990s. During that time, there was a bulletin board at alt.fan.holmes and the Hounds of the Internet, but not much else.<br />
<br />
Then in 1994, along came <a href="http://sherlockian.net/" target="_blank">Sherlockian.net</a>, which set out to capture all of the links about Sherlock Holmes on the Internet. It still stands as one of—if not the—best sites of Sherlock Holmes reference material online.<br />
<br />
It became one of the sites we visited on a regular basis, and has constantly been an inspiration for some of the content we share here on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere. While our our <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/p/resources.html#.V4-s5rgrLb0" target="_blank">Resources</a> section is nowhere near as complete, we tried to to our best to help keep up with some of the main links that we thought would be helpful.<br />
<br />
But as Sherlockian.net proprietor and IHOSE contributor Chris Redmond told us in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose99" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 99</a>, trying to document everything on the web quickly became a very difficult task.<br />
<br />

As the online world of Sherlock Holmes has grown exponentially — particularly over the last four or five years of social media's rise to prominence — that task has only gotten more cumbersome.<br />
<br />
So it was with great surprise and alarm that we saw Chris's announcement today that Sherlockian.net would be shutting down on December 31, 2016. This grand and legendary resource that has been online for 22 years might not be with us much longer.<br />
<br />
We're hoping that we can get a stay of execution. We've already heard from some like-minded Sherlockians who want to see the site continue, or see its contents protected and given new life on other sites. The immense work that has gone into creating the hundreds of pages there (and believe us, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/reaching-milestone.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">we understand</a> what it's like to create that much content) is at times a thankless job.<br />
<br />
We have to believe that such a decision by Chris does not come lightly, and we don't want to see his life's work vanish in an instant. We have some ideas about how to keep the lights on or to continue to make the content available to interested Sherlockians around the world. Perhaps you have some ideas too. Feel free to leave a comment below or email us.<br />

A valid first step is to create a sitemap of Sherlockian.net and catalog all of the content. If there's anyone who can help take a stab at that, we'd appreciate it.<br />
<br />
The creative process is a daunting and lonely task at times. But preserving great content should be a collective work. And Chris's work at Sherlockian.net is as outstanding as it is prodigious. Let's make sure it's enduring.<br />

Well, we managed to do it. And it only took us nine years, an 18-month hiatus, one lost episode and thousands of fans.<br />

We asked you what you wanted to hear for the centenary of the first podcast for Sherlock Holmes devotees, and time and again, we heard from you, telling us to do a retrospective - a look back at our favorite moments from what we've accomplished. We also asked you what your favorite moments are and what you wanted to know from us. Well, we managed to deliver on both.<br />

Our 100th episode gave us a chance to reflect on exactly what turning 100 means, and to dive back into our murky and fuzzy origins. We try to answer some of your queries and we celebrate those who joined us previously before launching into our top memories of the show, as represented in audio clips. Our Gas-Lamp features two readings, including a new one created just for this episode. Finally, we wrap up with a couple of important announcements that you won't want to miss.<br />

The 1916 <i>Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual</i> will cover the topic of William Gillette's film <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. We here at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere <a href="http://ihose.co/1916film" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">broke the news</a> that the long-lost film had been discovered in Paris and covered <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/sherlock-holmes-in-san-francisco.html#.V4eggLgrLb0" target="_blank">the screening of the film</a> at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival last year.<br />
<br />
We're pleased to present four musical themes that were played for the American premiere of the restored Gillette <i>Sherlock Holmes</i>. The excerpts are meant to illustrate the article, “Scoring Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes,” that acclaimed composer Donald Sosin wrote for the <i>BSJ Christmas Annual</i>, describing how he composed his music. And although these film excerpts are best understood when used in conjunction with Donald’s article, they can also be enjoyed on their own — examples of how a great original Holmesian score is constructed and coordinated with the images.<br />

The tracks come from the opening night performance when Gillette’s film was screened at San Francisco’s Castro Theater on May 30, 2015, where 2,000 people heard the score that night, performed by Sosin and his ensemble: Donald on piano with Günther Buchwald, violin; Sascha Jacobsen, bass; and Frank Bockius, percussion.<br />

Since then, the film has attracted several first-rate scores – all quite distinct and all fine examples of the broad range of silent film accompaniment. The film has attracted several leading silent film composers – Stephen Horne who accompanied the film in Bangkok; Neil Brand in Paris, London, Pordenone, and on the Flicker Alley DVD; Steve Sterner at New York’s Film Forum; Dan Drazin in Northbrook, Illinois; Dennis James in Santa Barbara, California; and Phil Carli at the Library of Congress and the BSI Conference in Chautauqua. No two performers sound alike, each creating his own signature motifs and building on those motifs to give fresh perspective to the characters and plot lines.</div>

The themes performed here are the building blocks that Sosin created to build his extraordinary score. The themes recur, permitting improvisation and ingenious acoustic effects and designed to provide a musical mirror to the ever-changing mood and action.</div>

<a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sherlock-holmes-the-odessa-connection#/" target="_blank">According to Sosin in an Indiegogo</a> he ran, he has been commissioned by the Odessa International Film Festival to expand that 4-musician score for a 45-piece orchestra. The premiere of that composition is set for July 16, 2016. The music is in rehearsal and on schedule – a generous, anonymous donor stepped in to make up the short fall. We certainly hope that more audiences will have the benefit of hearing it outside of Odessa.</div>

Holmesian pastiche is rife with mashups, especially the literary kind. Hoping to generate a strong story, authors frequently pair Holmes and Watson with other characters and historical figures to create unique tales that might not fit regular canon.<br />

Discovering Holmes with his infamous seven-per-cent solution, Watson spurs Holmes to investigate a series of grave robberies. As the plot progresses, Holmes and Watson find themselves encountering the results of one scientist's ambitions...and facing the challenge of another ambitious scientist's plans.<br />

<i>Sherlock Holmes and the Horror of Frankenstein</i> works as a more horror-oriented version of the canon. Klinger's art and layouts are very solid, driving the narrative and building the appropriate mood and atmosphere. Kuhn's writing is also exceptional - mostly dialogue-driven, but with clear awareness of both Conan Doyle and Mary Shelley's works, integrating both into a solid story that may seem reminiscent of past efforts, yet has a Holmesian flair of its own.<br />

Never say never about what Sherlockians might do or have already done, but so far as I know, the new society in the coal valleys of Pennsylvania, which held its first meeting recently, is the only one that has ever staged a reenactment of the Scowrers initiation from <i>The Valley of Fear</i> as a means of inducting new members. I wasn't there, and of course haven't passed through the necessary ordeals myself, so I don't know whether branding irons were involved. However, photos have appeared publicly demonstrating that there were blindfolds, and presumably ritual questions and answers (not the ones familiar to the Musgrave family). <br />
<br />
When Jack McMurdo was admitted to the original Lodge 341, Vermissa, he was already a member of the Ancient Order of Freemen and had passed through whatever tests the more respectable Lodge 29, Chicago, required. The Bodymaster's requirements at Vermissa were extra. Both experiences can be seen as examples of what would now be called hazing, which has two general purposes: to ensure that someone is fit to be part of an organization and know its secrets, and to make the newcomer temporarily uncomfortable for the amusement of those already on the inside.<br />
When Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the Vermissa scene (Part II, Chapter III of <i>The Valley of Fear</i>) in 1914, he surely was remembering his own experience of being initiated into Phoenix Lodge 257 of the Freemasons in Southsea in 1887. He was not of course branded or threatened with sharp points to the eyes, but the essence of the experience, being a novice and the center of attention while not knowing what's about to happen, must have informed his description of McMurdo's welcome at Vermissa many years later.<br />

<h4>
Freemasons in the Canon</h4>
The Freemasons, or simply Masons, figure several times in the Canon; much has been written about Jabez Wilson's "arc-and-compass breastpin," John Hector McFarlane's "watch-charm," and so on. Neither the secrets nor the activities of Freemasons figure in the stories in any substantial way — that was left for the scriptwriters of <i>Murder by Decree</i> in 1979. When Holmes says in "A  Scandal in Bohemia" that "There is a wonderful sympathy and freemasonry among horsy men," he is using the word in a very loose sense, and his initiation into that freemasonry seems to have involved nothing more than "[lending] the ostlers a hand in rubbing down their horses".<br />

Secret Societies, or Societies with Secrets?</h4>
Everything about Masonic secrets is a sensitive subject. Doubly sensitive is the question of how far Masonic ritual influenced the ceremonies of Mormonism when they were being developed, mostly in Ohio in the 1830s, some forty years before the events narrated in the second part of A Study in Scarlet. I am neither a Mason nor a Mormon, but I am willing to believe various authors who see similarities in the ceremonial words and handshakes used in the two traditions. In both cases, the rituals have religious meanings, the Masons looking to "the Great Architect" and the Mormons to God as understood by the Latter-Day Saints churches, and neither group tolerates the horseplay that we would understand as "hazing". <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> mentions the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, but does not talk about the crucial Endowment ceremony that takes place there. However, the Mormons who figure in the novel certainly have secrets, and their flying squad, the Avenging Angels, have passwords just as the Masons and the Ancient Order of Freemen do.<br />
<br />
Other secret societies appear in the Canon as well, notably "the Red Circle, which was allied to the old Carbonari", into which Gennaro Lucca had been "initiated" at Naples. The arrival of the society in New York, with word that "a lodge would be held upon a certain date," precipitated the dreadful events of the story that is likewise called "The Red Circle". The society that figures as a red herring in "The Six Napoleons," though identified as "the Mafia," is not dissimilar, and no doubt has its own initiation rituals.<br />
<br />
Finally, there is the Ku Klux Klan, the "terrible secret society" appears in "The Five Orange Pips." It clearly had its symbols, "a sprig of oak-eaves in some parts, melon seeds or orange pips in others," but since the intended victims were meant to understand the messages they were sent, they were hardly very secret. We are not told whether aspiring members of this particular version of the Klan had to undergo an initiation, or whether adhering to its anti-Republican political views was enough.<br />

Greek Interpreter Needed</h4>
In popular culture these days, hazing is mostly associated with college fraternities and sororities, although the reputable ones have largely repudiated it. "Greek letter organizations" date from the early 19th century, but most of their practices as they have been known over the past few generations originated after the American Civil War, largely in the southern states — interestingly, the same time and place in which the original Klan held sway. <br />
<br />
Unsurprisingly, no fraternities or sororities are mentioned in the Canonical stories, unless the Alpha Inn ("The Blue Carbuncle") qualifies on the strength of its single Greek letter. There is, however, what a newspaper quoted in "The Illustrious Client" called "that criminal fraternity which has so often had occasion to bewail the activity and ingenuity of the injured man", namely Sherlock Holmes. It is not clear whether the criminal fraternity had its own initiation procedures.<br />

Sherlock Holmes is no stranger to the animal kingdom. We have seen <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/07/thirty-years-of-great-mouse-detective.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a delightful rodent version</a> of the great detective in Basil of Baker street, a number of canine variations such as the animated Sherlock Hound and Wishbone, the dog from the children's series, dawning the Holmes role in "The Slobber Hound," and there has even been a Sherlock Sheep in the social network game of Farmville.<br />
<br />
But there never has been quite a Sherlockian character quite like Octavius Bear, a 1,400 pound anthropomorphic Kodiak bear living in an alternate future world where humans have perished and have been replaced by intelligent animals.<br />
<br />
We interviewed author Harry DeMaio on how he imagined this Holmesian series, one like no other.<br />
<br />
<h4>
<b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere: Tell us about <a href="http://mxpublishing.com/search?ssv=demaio" target="_blank">the world of Octavius Bear</a> and why you decided to make a Holmesian character in a world of intelligent animals.</b></h4>
<b>Harry DeMaio:</b> Here’s the story background: About 100,000 years ago, according to scientific experts, a colossal solar flare blasted out from the Sun, creating gigantic magnetic storms here on Earth. These highly charged electrical tempests caused startling physical and psychological imbalances in the then population of our world. The complete nervous systems of some species were totally destroyed. For example, <i>Homo sapiens</i> lost all mental and motor capabilities and rapidly became extinct. Less developed species exposed to the radiation were affected differently.  Four-footed and finned mammals, birds and reptiles suddenly found themselves capable of complex thought, enhanced emotions, self-awareness, social consciousness and the ability to communicate, sometimes orally, sometimes telepathically, often both. Both speech production and speech perception slowly progressed with the evolution of tongues, lips, vocal cords and enhanced ear to brain connections. Many species developed opposable digits, fingers or claws, further accelerating civilized progress. Some others (most fish and underground dwellers) were shielded from the radiation and remained only as sentient as they were before the blast. This event is referred to as The Big Shock.  It remains under intensive study.<br />
<br />
Alternate universes play an increasing level of importance in each succeeding book. Let’s hear it for Quantum Superposition and good old Schrodinger.<br />
<br />
I wanted a new type of detective and I based Octavius on several prototypes, including Holmes.<br />
<br />
Octavius is a nine foot tall, 1400 pound Kodiak Bear/consulting detective/scientist/inventor/seeker of justice/mega-billionaire owner of Universal Ursine Industries/narcoleptic war hero/gourmet-gourmand/somewhat sedentary and grouchy just on general principles. He is a hybrid character somewhat loosely based on Sherlock Holmes and Nero Wolfe with some characteristics of each but definitely his own bear. Octavius, among his many talents and accomplishments, he is a brilliant, self-taught practitioner in the wide ranging fields of biology, physics, ursinology, voodoo, teleology, chemistry, apiculture and oenology as well as a first rate electrical, electronic, structural, marine, aeronautical, mechanical and chemical engineer.  He has a few other interesting characteristics such as falling into brief, deep narcoleptic comas – side effects of his successful genetic experiments to eliminate the need for him to hibernate. He, his associates and nemeses are all figments of my warped imagination.<br />

<h4>
<b>IHOSE: Octavius is inspired by Holmes but he has some significant differences. What are some ways the characters are similar and different?</b></h4>
<b>HD: </b> The two primary inspirations for Octavius and his sidekick, Maury Meerkat are Holmes/Watson and Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin. Octavius is nine feet tall. Maury a little more than two feet. I wanted to play heavily on the sidekick dynamic with characters whose personalities, physical characteristics and backgrounds were wildly different but generally compatible. Octavius suffers from narcolepsy which pops up at very inopportune times.  Although he thinks he is, The Great Bear is not infallible and Maury lets him know it.   So do the Bearoness and Chita.<br />

<b>IHOSE: There really has never been a book series quite like this one. At times your books are as serious as <i>Watership Down</i> and at others as goofy as <i>Zootopia</i>.  What, besides the original Holmes tales, were your literary influences in crafting this series?</b></h4>
<b>HD: </b> I’ve already mentioned Nero Wolfe (Rex Stout.) I am an animal enthusiast with a special affection for bears so I did a lot of research on the animal kingdom and queendom.  One of my primary villains, Imperius Drake is described as “Moriarty with wings,” The Thin Man films and some of the Sam Spade stories helped. You may have noticed that every chapter begins with a limerick and there are periodic disquisitions on the nature of this alternative earth. I also include short descriptions of the <i>dramatis personae</i> at the beginning of each volume. All of these features resonate well with the reader.<br />

<b>IHOSE:  Will we ever see Octavius Bear somehow meet the real Sherlock Holmes? </b></h4>
<b>HD:  </b>Octavius has had meetings and dealings with Fetlock Holmes, the Great Horse Detective. We’d have to switch to another alternative universe to have Octavius and Sherlock Holmes come together. One that includes Homo Sapiens. I describe one in Book Four- <i>The Lower Case</i>. The meeting is possible with a manipulation of time as well as location but not immediately in the cards.<br />

<b>HD:</b>  "A Scandal in Bohemia" for several reasons. First, I greatly admire Irene Adler who comes as close to being a romantic interest as Conan Doyle ever invented. Second, Holmes both wins and loses in this one. Refreshing to see him caught up by The Woman. A shame she appears so seldom in the Canon and subsequent pastiches.<br />

<b>IHOSE: What are your upcoming projects?</b></h4>
<b>HD: </b> Completion of Book Five - <i>The Curse of the Mummy’s Case</i> -  later this year. I’m also looking into converting the Casebooks into scripts for animated films.<br />

<b>HD: </b>Females play major roles in my books. Chita, Frau Schuylkill and the Polar Bearoness Belinda Bearnaise Bruin Bear (nee Black) are reader favorites but there are many others – heroines and villains alike. Octavius’ mother, Juno, is one of my favorites. Octavius and the Bearoness marry in Book Two and at the end of Book Four, two cubs, one male, one female arrive on the scene. They have major roles in Book Five along with their governess, Mlle Woof. (Yes, it is possible for a polar bear and Kodiak to have offspring.)  Bearnice and Bearyl are identical twins and in addition to piloting Bearoness Belinda’s SST Concorde, they sing and act and appear in the Bearoness’ Aquashow – Some Like It Cold.  But Chita (or the  pseudonymous Madame Catherine Catt) seems to really resonate. Pardon the pun, but she’s a keeper.</div>

Today marks 86 years since Arthur Conan Doyle became the ultimate spiritualist. On July 7, 1930, he died after suffering a heart attack. By all accounts, he was a remarkable man — one who was much more than simply the creator of the timeless detective Sherlock Holmes.<br />
