It goes on for a little longer than necessary, but it does set the tone — you know you’re in for lighthearted fare. This is a collection of short, humorous tales, more along the lines of <i>Without a Clue</i> or <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother</i> than it is reminiscent of the Canon.<br /> <br /> That’s not to say that the Canon is ignored. The author makes good use of it, and the comedy is never derisive. The plots are just as often simple domestic troubles at 221B Baker Street as they are cases from clients, but those scenes are just as entertaining as the mysteries.<br /> <br /> Whether witnessing Watson’s imagination run wild and suspecting Mrs. Hudson of poisoning Holmes, or watching Holmes track down Oscar Wilde’s notebook with anticlimactic results, these short tidbits from the lives of Holmes and Watson are a fun read. My personal favorite was “The Mystery of Mornington Crescent,” a post-retirement story that brings Holmes back to London to investigate an Underground station where no trains stop. There is no other mention of Whitaker's (or any other almanac) anywhere in the Canon, but there can be little doubt that it was a frequently used reference at 221B Baker Street, standing on the shelf right next to such other workhorses as <i>Bradshaw's </i>(railway timetables), <i>Crockford's </i>(Church of England clergy), <i>Debrett's </i>(genealogy and careers of the aristocracy), perhaps even <i>Wisden's </i>(cricket).</div> <br /> Whitaker's is still in business, now in its 148th annual edition, and <a href="http://www.whitakersalmanack.com/" target="_blank">complemented by a website</a>, <a href="http://whitakersalmanack.com/">whitakersalmanack.com</a>.<br /> <br /> It is distinctly British, with its emphasis on names and details of British government and business. The North American equivalent probably is (or was, before the Internet was everybody's default reference source) the <i>World Almanac</i> formerly published by the <i>New York World-Telegram</i>. The <i>Old Farmer's Almanac</i>, legendary though it be, is hardly in the same league.<br /> <br /> I don't believe I've ever owned an up-to-date <i>Whitaker's</i>, but I do have an old one, and it is an essential tool in my Sherlockian research, as well as evidence of how valuable it must have been at times to Holmes and Watson. It is the almanac for 1893, right in the heart of the Baker Street era. I've lost track of how I came upon it, its original gilt-and crimson leather binding has been replaced, and its digest-sized pages are yellowing, but it is as vital a tool as ever it was.<br /> <br /> Behold this volume of 728 pages (plus more than another 150 for advertisements). Holmes speaks accurately when he observes that "It is in double column. Though reserved in its earlier vocabulary, it becomes… quite garrulous towards the end." Miscellaneous anniversaries also find a place, including the death dates of the Rev. J. G. Wood (he who identified the Lion's Mane) and Emperor Napoleon III.<br /> <br /> Beyond that, there are exhaustive lists of peers and baronets, majors-general, Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools, judges, warships, archdeacons, professors — yes, Whitaker's is one of the "several trustworthy books of reference" in which Professor Moriarty's salary could have been ascertained. Oddly, I do not find his name here; but of course, this is the 1893 edition, and he is known to have died at Reichenbach in 1891.<br /> <br /> The book continues with information about the Royal Academy (artists), banks, sheriffs, fairs, wheat prices, weights and measures, tax rates, and railway companies. Garrulous passages, interspersed with statistics, running from page 441 to page 571, cover the British Empire and the nations of the world. There are a couple of mentions of Mahratta, though none, so far as I can see, of pigs'-bristles. Page 534, which Holmes and Watson used to solve their cipher, is in this 1893 edition of the book mostly about the economy of Egypt, with a mention of the Khalifa.<br /> <br /> The world is vastly changed since Joseph Whitaker, the almanac's first editor, put this volume to press 123 years ago. For that very reason, a Sherlockian (this Sherlockian, at any rate) finds it useful for the information it provides about postage rates, cab fares, the salaries of government employees (the postmaster at Wandsworth earned £450 a year, just like Mycroft Holmes), and the hours of the British Museum. Harper Collins Needs to Do More Detective Work for The Crime Club

So you will all understand that I have plenty of important things to do - and writing this blog post was definitely not on that list.<br /> <br /> However, that British newspaper <i>The Sunday Times</i> makes it impossible for me not to react. Today they published the utmost rubbish (<a href="http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/literary-sleuth-unmasks-conan-doyle-as-plot-thief-gsrkfvflq" target="_blank">"Literary sleuth unmasks Conan Doyle as plot thief"</a> [paywall] regarding Conan Doyle, and I just get so annoyed. It seems that anyone can claim whatever they want about Conan Doyle – and the newspapers will believe it. Even <i>The Sunday Times</i>.<br /> <br /> We have seen it so many times before. Just mention Conan Doyle's name, and the journalists will lose all interest in checking the credibility of the source. Especially if the source is not at all a Conan Doyle expert. In the newspaper world anyone saying anything about Conan Doyle is an expert. In the case of<span style="font-family: inherit;"> <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/02/conan-doyle-didnt-write-lost-sherlock.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the Scottish man who found a short story last year</a> that he thought was written by Conan Doyle, he even said himself that he was no Conan Doyle expert, yet the newspapers treated his views on the authenticity of the story as the views of an expert. And they saw no need to contact a real Conan Doyle expert before spreading the extraordinary news over the world. (The Scottish man was <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/03/the-final-word-on-lost-sherlock-holmes.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">wrong</a>, of course.)</span><br /> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">This time it's Harper Collins that just want publicity for a forthcoming anthology. So they contacted <i>The Sunday Times</i>. On June 16 they will publish <i><a href="https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780008137335/the-crime-club" target="_blank">The Crime Club</a></i> – and this is h<span style="background-color: white;">ow they describe the book on their web site: </span></span><br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">"The Detective Story Club’s first short story anthology is based around a London detective club and includes three newly discovered tales unpublished for 100 years, plus a story bearing an uncanny resemblance to a Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes story but written some seven years earlier."</span></span></blockquote> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">The story with the "uncanny resemblance" is a short story from 1915 with a plot that is extrem</span>ely close to the plot of "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Problem_of_Thor_Bridge" target="_blank">The Problem of Thor Bridge</a>", which Conan Doyle wrote in 1921 and published in 1922. According to <i>The Sunday Times</i> it was the proof reader Hugo Lamb who noticed this resemblance, and David Brawn at Harper Collins "has no doubt that Lamb has solved a literary crime." Brawn concludes, "It's real plagiarism."</span><br /> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">Oh, please. </span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: inherit;">Why not take the time to do some research before you contact <i>The Times</i>? Or here's a stretch: how about <a href="http://lmgtfy.com/?q=thor+bridge+plot+origin" target="_blank">a good old fashioned Google search</a>? I tried – it took me two minutes to search for "thor bridge plot origin", which led me to search for "thor bridge hans gross" – and then I had all the material I needed.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span> <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: inherit;">This is no secret – anyone can find it in e.g. Leslie S. Smith had found it – an authentic crime case – in Dr Hans Gross' <i>Criminal Investigation – A Practical Handbook</i>, published in English in 1906, and in German already in 1893. Since the authors of the 1915 story were a superintendent and a police historian, they had of course read the same non-fiction book, and based their story on it.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span> <span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white;">What really bothers me is not only this article in <i>The Sunday Times</i>, but the fact that Harper Collins, according to their presentation of the book, seems to make a mystery of something that is not a mystery, and while doing so are making accusations against Conan Doyle that are totally unfair and false. </span></span><br /> <span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span> <span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white;">However, anyone can be a Conan Doyle expert. Just go ahead and claim whatever you want. People will publish it. And I will – again – waste my time on complaining about it.</span></span><br /> <span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span> <br /> <div> <span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white;">Finally, I want to apologize to my family and to my American publisher Otto Penzler for having written this blog post. Shortly after their introduction, Scott builds a time-travel device that allows him to take on the personas of his past and future reincarnations. With Conan Doyle as his partner, the would-be Time Traveler Professor works to unravel the secrets of the red book, uncovering Spiritualist mysteries that stretch their bond to its breaking point. <br /> <br /> One of the most creative elements of the novel is the connection between reincarnation and time travel, which strengthens the scenes where Scott and Doyle dive in to other eras. Instead of remaining mere observers of history, the characters are able to fully interact with a variety of detailed milieus, including feudal Japan and an underground academy of magic in the steampunk future. Her presence provoked fascinating questions about the soul, gender, and John Patrick’s treatment of women that could have been further explored in the story.<br /> <br /> Unfortunately, the novel’s breakneck pace often reduces the amount of time the reader gets to spend with many of its compelling secondary characters, as well as creating other issues that affect the cohesion of its central storyline. In addition to its lengthy sojourns in other time periods, the narrative covers a sizable swath of the early 20th century; in just under 350 pages, the reader races from the fin de siècle to the onset of World War One.<br /> <br /> John Patrick Scott’s journey to becoming the Time Traveler Professor is the story’s central focus in the midst of rapid time shifts, but characters and entire plots are alternately removed from or inserted into the narrative in a streamlining effort that creates more confusion than clarity. Characters who are established as key players, including the reincarnations, disappear with little explanation. Scott’s investigation into the origins of the red book—the impetus for the entire story—is put on hold for more than fifty pages as he describes his double-sided affair with a married couple in Germany, only for the focus to return to his mystical investigation without providing a definitive conclusion for the subplot that temporarily took center stage. <br /> <br /> Furthermore, the Victorian-based characters’ relationship to their own time and setting becomes less tangible to the reader as the narrative progresses. When Scott discusses topics like psychology or sexuality with his contemporaries, the dialogue takes on the tone of 21st century academics discussing the era’s politics instead of a conversation between people actually living in the time period. These inconsistencies can sometimes make it hard for the reader to firmly understand the story’s actions as well as the purposes of its peripheral characters, and while John Patrick Scott’s arc is a unique one, I feel that his motivations and opinions could be expressed through more subtle contextual details rather than direct exposition concerning his time’s standard ideologies.<br /> <br /> But <i>Silent Meridian</i>’s secret weapon lies in its most famous Victorian figure, for its representation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle reveals new facets about the writer that perhaps some Sherlockians have never taken into full consideration. In works of fiction and nonfiction, Conan Doyle’s embrace of Spiritualism in his later years has been either ignored or depicted with an air of disappointment. To this day, many find it difficult to admit that the man who created one of fiction’s most logical characters also believed in seances and fairies.<br /> <br /> Yet Elizabeth Crowens manages to wonderfully synchronize Conan Doyle’s rationality with his spirituality. In his fictional efforts to explore the paranormal with John Patrick Scott, he approaches the quest as a scientist does an experiment, conducting trials alongside Scott that help him validate his beliefs. He made the announcement on St. Patrick's Day, an ironically appropriate date for an Irish-themed society (it takes its name, of course, from a reference in "His Last Bow").<br /><br /><h3> "it's over for me" [VALL]</h3> In recent years AISSAB has held monthly Thursday night meetings at a library in the Buffalo suburbs, but with smaller and smaller participation. In his message, Aikin suggested that <i><b>if someone wants to try to revive the group, quarterly meetings, at a different time in the week, might be a more realistic program</b></i>.<br /><br /><div> An Irish Secret Society at Buffalo was founded in 1976 and held frequent, lively meetings. Its dominant figure was Frank Hoffmann, whose scholarship and activity were recognized in 1979 when he was invested in the Baker Street Irregulars as, of course, "Altamont". AISSAB sponsored one of John Bennett Shaw's classic Sherlockian workshops, held in June 1978 at the historic Buffalo History Museum building (pictured). From 1978 to about 1992 the society's little magazine, Covert Notes, edited by Dolores Rossi Script and then MaryKathleen Brennan, was one of the most respected scion journals in an era when Sherlockian publishing was bustin' out all over. <br /><br />The group has fallen on bad times at least once before; there was a break in continuity the 1980s, and some of its former members formed the <b>Drops of Water of Greater Niagara</b>, which took pride in being a cross-border society and thus a scion of both the Baker Street Irregulars and the Bootmakers of Toronto. It was under Bruce Aikin's leadership that AISSAB eventually re-formed, and the Drops of Water ceased to dribble.<br /><br />In the lively years, there was much interaction between the Bootmakers and AISSAB, including a series of joint social events. Aikin is an active member of the Bootmakers: he even served as Meyers, or president, in 2008, and is thus probably the only person who has been president of local Sherlockian societies in two different countries.<br /><br />Do you have any stories of a society forming or folding in your area? For those unfamiliar, TED-Ed is an arm of TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design), the conference dedicated to "Ideas worth spreading," which are widely shared on <a href="http://ted.com/" target="_blank">their website</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/ted" target="_blank">YouTube channel</a>.<br /> <br /> TED-Ed is TED’s youth and education initiative whose mission is to spark and celebrate the ideas of teachers and students around the world. Her presence is noted throughout the Canon, yet her purpose is never exaggerated nor promoted. I am new to reading/studying the Canon, but a woman who is mentioned briefly but repetitively, adds depth and significance to her mention. I have a fondness for puzzle mysteries and secret messages; what would be more appropriate than having Holmes demonstrate his prowess by cracking a double-substitution cipher before our very eyes? The Wheatstone-Playfair cipher was invented in 1854, but came into prominence during the Second Boer War and World War I. "The Adventure of the Turkish Cipher" opens in late November, 1885, but refers to a case that took place in the midst of Holmes' two years at university.</div> <div style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 22.4px;"> <br /> This project has generated so much momentum and interest for the restoration of Undershaw. One of my all-time favorite short stories which I used to enjoy teaching is Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace." With Holmes gaining ascendancy in my brain, I began to think of the story in terms of a mystery. Without giving away the plot of "The Adventure of the Missing Necklace"--let alone giving away Maupassant's--I'll just say that Holmes' encounter with a diamond necklace serves as my explanation for the basis of Maupassant's wonderful story. Holmes' part in my piece takes place in 1879 in London's Montague Street and its environs. He does end up in France, however, where he meets Maupassant. The timing is important because my intrigue involving Holmes had to occur before Maupassant's story was published in 1884.</div> <div style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: white;"> My experience with the first MX Anthology was so positive that I couldn't resist the chance to repeat the process. The tale revolves around the unexpected death of an Australian diplomat in Stoke Newington and has the great detective partnering up with Mickleburgh for a whirlwind investigation commissioned by Mycroft Holmes. Mickleburgh proves his worth, being an expert on medieval weaponry, and together the two uncover more about the mysterious Bosworth Order.<br /> <br /> I loved the idea of writing about Holmes when he was living in Montague Street, in the period before he met Watson. The relationship between Mickleburgh and Holmes gives us a glimpse of how the detective benefits from - but is sometimes seen to be struggling with - the dynamics of working in partnership. While very different to our beloved Watson, Mickleburgh nevertheless provides us with a fresh perspective on the approach and character of the consulting detective in those early years. I began writing Holmes pastiches in 2015 and my first story, "The Strange Missive of Germaine Wilkes," appeared in Volume I of the anthology. Shortly afterwards, my own collection of Holmes and Watson tales was published by MX under the title, <i>A Farewell to Baker Street</i>. While I have made my name as a non-fiction crime and history writer, I am now pursuing my real dream of penning more and more lively tales about Holmes and Watson. The location was chosen over Oxford in large part due to my fond memories of doing a semester abroad there while in college. The time-frame was chosen as it preceded the 1883 publication of "The Silver Hatchet" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the spirit of the Great Game, I suppose that Watson's first literary editor plainly had heard the 'true' version of this story from Watson and subsequently changed many of the details before publishing it in the <i>London Society</i> magazine. Let the truth finally be told!</div> <div style="background-color: white;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white;"> As for why I wanted to contribute, well, the thought of not doing so as soon as David asked me never crossed my mind! In fact, I dropped the longer tale that I was writing at the time and immediately set to work upon the Double-Edged Hoard, given his rather tight deadline. So much of the canon is defined by their friendship and I was intrigued to see what influence Watson would exert on Holmes when the Doctor was absent. The story takes place in London, because that’s where Sherlock Holmes lived. It recounts a brief incident at that faded grand hotel which occurred while they were on a longer case which will be recounted in my upcoming novel, <i>Unquiet Spirits</i>. Enroute to Montpelier to visit a scientist there, Holmes and Watson detour to this place, where they receive free lodgings in return for Holmes consulting for the house detective on this small but tricky matter of a jewel theft.</div> <div style="background-color: white;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white;"> My first visit to Undershaw was with Luke Benjamen Kuhns organized by Steve Emecz in 2013, and it was a highly emotional moment. The plight of this place has troubled me since. While controversial, the restoration and repurposing will, I believe, honor the legacy of Conan Doyle. As Trasker was of a nervous disposition, he was particularly disturbed to see from an upstairs window the deceased Derringsham driving a coach at night. When this incident is repeated, Trasker shoots the apparition, blowing it to pieces with his shotgun. He cannot explain these happenings, still less so when Derringsham reappears yet again, no worse for the experience. Although in my younger days I wrote enough weird fiction to fill a book (<i>In the Night </i>—<i> In the Dark</i>, published by MX, since you ask) I've only ever written one detective story. Unsurprisingly, it's a Sherlock Holmes story, based on two clues that still seem to me rather good. The idea for "The Adventure of the Grace Chalice" had been buzzing around in my head for a very long time before I wrote a proper version, as my entry in the the Sherlock Holmes Society of London's first and only pastiche competition. It was placed third, and was published in the Winter 1987 issue of <i>The Sherlock Holmes Journal</i>. A few years later I revised the story, bringing the style as close as I could to Conan Doyle's, and submitted it to Mike Ashley for The Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures, published in 1997. It's still entitled "The Adventure of the Grace Chalice", but I changed the client's name, to link the narrative to one of the cases that are mentioned in the canon but not recounted there. Neither the story nor the subsequent audio play mentions a month or a year, but Mike Ashley dates the case to December 1895, and I'll happily agree with that. After all, "it is always 1895", is it not?</div> <div style="background-color: white;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white;"> The adaptation came about because in 2010 I had volunteered to provide a dramatic entertainment for the Sherlock Holmes Society of London. Rather than badger the industrious Matthew J. Elliott, I decided to see what I could do. The result, later recorded by the same cast (<a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/category/podcasts/page/3/" target="_blank">freely downloadable here</a>), works better, I think, than the original narrative version. I like to have Holmes' reputation known to those with whom he comes into contact, when he is at the height of his professional career, as it makes for interesting interactions between the detective and his clients, (and his quarry at times). The adventure remains untold, by the way, as it involves some unsavoury doings of Harden's in the past. Watson were at the height of their fame and were recognisable public figures. I adore the Baker Street sitting room as the setting where so many of their adventures begin, and can quite happily write long scenes of dialogue and bickering and banter between the two friends, with occasional interjections from Mrs Hudson, before a client even knocks on the door with a problem to present for the detective's consideration. In fact, Imagination Theatre recently recorded my Holmes and Watson two-hander, "The Case of the Confounded Chronicler," which focuses entirely on the two men and occurs entirely within their familiar sitting room, for their long-running <i>The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> radio series. So by commencing this new story in a different environment, and bringing the "client" into contact with our heroes in a different manner, I wanted to give a little shake up to my own approach to tackling a Sherlock Holmes adventure. Besides, where better to present a tale of train-travel and terror than in a compartment on an actual train?</div> <div style="background-color: white;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white;"> I was just one out of the many contributors to the initial project that grew in scope to three weighty volumes (my story, "The Adventure of the Seventh Stain" appears in Volume 1), and I was delighted not only by the books themselves - which are incredibly handsome editions packed to bursting with wonderful stories by some hugely talented and imaginative people - but also by the tremendous response to the collection on Kickstarter and subsequently.</div> <div style="background-color: white;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white;"> So when David Marcum revealed there were more volumes in the works, it wasn't a difficult choice in agreeing to contribute a further untold tale. He and Watson are established companions but the shadow of Moriarty has yet to loom over Baker Street. Holmes is at the height of his powers and his fame is widespread, which seemed to fit with the idea of a lowly old labourer knowing about him and being able to consult him. Also, of course, in real terms, it is the year of the Jack the Ripper murders, which is a topic which has long fascinated me since I was a young (perhaps far too young!) boy.</div> <div style="background-color: white;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white;"> As with volumes 1-3, I think this is an ambitious and exciting project. I am a writer and a lifelong Holmes fanatic and the opportunity to contribute to such a continuing and important collection of new Holmes stories was too good to miss. </div> <div style="background-color: white;"> <br /></div> <div style="background-color: white;"> But, as with my contribution to volume 2, it is not simply having the opportunity to contribute to a new series of Holmes stories (which is of course always a welcome thing).
