We know there are versions of the sitting room at 221B Baker Street that can be found at the <a href="http://www.sherlockholmespub.com/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Pub</a> in London, the <a href="http://www.sherlockholmes.ch/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Museum</a> in Lucens, at <a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.co.uk/" target="_blank">221B (aka 239) Baker Street</a> in London, and in <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/recliner/7603051766/in/photostream/" target="_blank">Meirengen</a>, and Denny Dobry's basement in <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/05/221b-baker-street-reading-pennsylvania.html#.U2m4X_ldWSo" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Reading, Pennsylvania</a>, to name a few.<br>

But did you know that <a href="http://minitonga.thing.com/" target="_blank">The Mini-Tonga Society</a> is a Sherlock Holmes group that is interested only in miniature recreations of 221B? Founded in 1979 by Dee Snyder, Dorothy Shaw and John Bennett Shaw, it was mostly a correspondence club whose members occasionally gathered and showed off their creations. Some were made by hand, while others hunted for pieces to complete their creation. Sadly, we can't seem to get any of the images to load on the Mini-Tonga Society's site.<br>

As we know, Sherlock Holmes has been used in advertising for more than 100 years. The sold-out <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/christmasannual2009.html" target="_blank">2009 <i>Baker Street Journal</i> Christmas Annual</a> was all about the topic. (Which reminds us: you can't get the Christmas Annual as a standalone any longer - <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/itemsforsale/subscriptions.html" target="_blank">subscribe to the BSJ toda</a>y and you'll receive the Annual bundled with your quarterly subscription).<br />

Previously on these pages, we've covered how <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/04/a-collector-of-fairy-tales-houn_13.html#.U2mtIPldWSp" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes was used in a visual campaign to encourage reading</a>, so it should be no surprise that he's back at it.<br />

Peter Blau kindly pointed out on <a href="http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/steimatzky_book_stores_sherlock_holmes" target="_blank">Ads of the World</a> that there is a campaign featured for Steimatzky Book Stores, the largest and oldest bookstore chain in Israel, under the tagline "Your book, your cast.". The idea is that everyone has his or her own vision of a character, so they're trying to fill the role of famous characters and are having casting calls: Sherlock Holmes, Don Quizote, Dracula and Red Riding Hood.<br />

Director, playwright and critic Charles Marowitz <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/obituaries/la-me-charles-marowitz-20140506-story.html" target="_blank">died on May 2</a> in California at the age of 80.<br />
<br />
Born in New York in 1934, by the 1960s he was part of the London theater scene and eventually mounted plays around the world. One of his assignments was a co-director of the Royal Shakespeare Company Experimental Group, where he may have felt the influence of the RSC's 1974 production of William Gillette's play <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> starring John Wood.<br />
<br />
For in 1987, Marowitz wrote the spoof <i>Sherlock's Last Case</i> in just one week, and it played on Broadway from August through December of 1987, starring Frank Langella in the title role.<br />

Of course, Langella was no stranger to Sherlock Holmes, as he played the part in the HBO production of William Gillette's play in 1981.<br />

UPDATE: Roger Johnson, BSI ("<i>Pall Mall Gazette</i>") has brought the following to our attention:<br />

<i>Sherlock's Last Case</i>, directed by Charles Marowitz but attributed to "Matthew Lang", was first performed at the Open Space in London in March 1974, with Julian Glover, Peter Bayliss and Kate O'Mara in the leading roles - so it actually predated the RSC's production of Gillette's Sherlock Holmes. The version staged on Broadway in 1987 was revised and expanded from the original - and it was only then, 13 years after the play's first appearance, that Marowitz admitted that he was in fact the author.</blockquote>

Of the play itself, <a href="http://www.stageplays.com/products/sherlocks_last_case/Charles%20Marowitz" target="_blank">stageplays.com</a> has this to say:<br />

Picking up where the famous stories ended, the play centers on a death threat against Sherlock Holmes by the supposed son of his late nemesis, Professor Moriarty.<br />

Oddly enough, however, Holmes is warned of the plot by Moriarty's daughter, to whom Holmes (who turns out to be quite a ladies man) is strongly attracted. The plot then twists and turns until Holmes finds himself imprisoned in a dank cellar, trapped not by young Moriarty but, to his shocked surprise, by the good Dr. Watson--who, it turns out, has long been bitterly resentful of his second class status as Holmes' lackey.<br />
<br />
After Holmes' demise Watson comes into his own, or seems to, until a number of imposters turn up claiming to be the real Sherlock Holmes.<br />

In sorting all this out the play mixes humor and suspense in equal amounts, leading to a stunning final twist which will surely catch audiences by complete and breath-stopping surprise.</blockquote>

We just celebrated <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/03/sherlockian-history-30-years-ago-today.html#.U2k15fldU1I" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">three decades of Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes</a>, and we were happy to discover that many fans of that lavishly produced series still exist. Nearly all of our correspondence and comments indicated that the earlier episodes were the strongest - before the show went off the rails.<br />
<br />
However, one element that simply does not get enough attention is something that you won't find in the DVD editions or re-airings of the Granada series on PBS channels across the nation. Lest we forget, in those days, <i>Mystery </i>and <i>Masterpiece Theater</i> alike had introductions that were nearly five minutes long and were hosted by luminaries such as Vincent Price and Alistair Cooke, respectively.<br />
<br />
Indeed, to many who watched that quality programming on those two PBS powerhouse shows, Price and Cooke were just as much part of the spectacle and interest as the actual programming was. After Price's failing health required him to give up the chair in 1989, Diana Rigg took over the duties and remained the host until PBS discontinued the practice in 2004.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9g-AluIe5g" target="_blank">The clip below</a> includes the very first introduction Vincent Price made for <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, as Jeremy Brett made his debut in "A Scandal in Bohemia." Price gives some essential background information to the character of Sherlock Holmes - as he did each week - and on the world of Sherlockians. Typically, the broadcast of the episode included a valedictory commentary in addition to the salutation, during which Price performed the same duties.<br />
<br />
As a bonus, the "outro" to the show is also part of the clip, as well as the end titles with Patrick Gowers' score and Sidney Paget's original illustrations.<br />

You may have heard of a word that has entered our collective lexicon, either in casual conversation or because of the news that it was the Oxford English Dictionary's word of the year for 2013. That word is: <b><i>selfie</i></b>.<br />

Simply put, a selfie is a photograph that is taken by an individual with his smartphone by extending an arm and snapping the photo back at himself. The most notorious selfie is the one snapped at the 86th Academy Awards in March:<br />

Everyone wants to capture themselves in a unique situation, with or without someone whom they happen to be with, or perhaps they just want to emote for the camera. But one wouldn't normally think of Michael Whelan, the current "Wiggins" of the Baker Street Irregulars, as the type that goes in for trendy things. In fact, he has described himself as a Luddite when it comes to technology. Fortunately, we caught him in a jovial mood at the annual dinner of the Speckled Band of Boston on Friday night, after he had an eye-opening day seeing all sorts of state-of-the-art digital technology at Harvard's Houghton Library - the institution that houses the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/" target="_blank">BSI Archives</a>.<br />

We were fortunate enough to ask Mike if he'd be willing to take a selfie with us, and he complied!<br />

We have all been there.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Perhaps you imagined Watson removing a decanter from the tantalus on the
sideboard, pouring you a drink, adding a splash of soda water from the gasogene
before inviting you to take a chair in the sitting room at 221B Baker Street.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You also may be able to imagine the 'VR' on
the wall, the wax bust of Holmes in the corner, and a violin carelessly left
out of its case and much too close to Holmes’ glassware and chemicals on his
lab table.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But 'fess up – your imagination
just isn't up to vividly re-creating the entire sitting room in your mind’s
eye.</div>

On Saturday, April 26<span style="font-size: x-small;">,</span> over 30 people attended
the open house at 221B in Reading, PA, as Denny Dobry and his wife Joann
showcased one of the most elaborate and complete reproductions of Holmes's and
Watson's sitting room on Baker Street in London.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have seen several other re-creations – at the
<a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.co.uk/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Museum</a> and at the <a href="http://www.sherlockholmespub.com/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Pub</a> in London, and back in the ‘70s I visited the Sherlock Holmes, Esq. Public
House on Union Square in San Francisco. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I haven’t been to all that exist (<a href="http://www.221bbakerstreetla.com/" target="_blank">221A Baker Street in LosAngeles</a> is one, and there is another in <a href="http://www.sherlockholmes.ch/" target="_blank">Meiringen, Switzerland</a>) but the amount of work and detail seen in
the room in the basement of a typical middle-class house just outside of
Reading is truly remarkable.</div>

Though constructed in the basement, the impression of a
first floor flat (second floor in America) is complete with the two
windows mentioned by Watson in <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Study in
Scarlet</i> overlooking Baker Street, with London street sounds in the
background.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You can look through the
windows to see a façade of the other buildings on Baker Street (painted on a
solid back wall).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The illusion is quite
striking.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><br />
<br />
But the real excitement is
experienced as you take in the incredible amount of detail that is seen in this
labor of love by Denny Dobry.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Everywhere
you look you see not only most every single item ever mentioned in the Canon, but
there are one or more artifacts from each of the 60 stories (including Baron Gruner’s 'little black book' with <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">very</i> private photographs of Victorian ladies with details of their
lives suitable for blackmailing and a specimen of a Lion's Mane jellyfish in a
glass jar!)<br />

There are, of course,
photographs of General Gordon and Henry Ward Beecher and Her Royal Majesty,
Queen Victoria, and an unbroken small plaster bust of Napoleon.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But there are literally hundreds of items <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">not</i> mentioned explicitly in the Canon
that we all <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">know</i> had to be there as
well: checks signed by Holmes or Watson made out to Mrs. Hudson for rent,
receipts from local shops, telegram blanks as well as Watson’s foot locker from
the Army and a framed copy of his commission in the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers.</div>

Denny was inspired by Paul Churchill's sitting room
re-creation in 1996 and began collecting (and manufacturing!) artifacts as he
planned his own room.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Construction of
the room's walls, floor and ceiling took about a year and was completed in
1999.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Members of various scions local to
Pennsylvania, and of course members of Denny’s own scion, the <a href="http://www.whiteroseirregulars.net/" target="_blank">White Rose Irregulars</a>,
have had the pleasure of visiting over the years.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>This open house was an opportunity for other
Sherlockians to marvel at the planning and effort that went into what is
arguably the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">most</i> complete
re-creation of the sitting room of the world’s first consulting detective and
his biographer, John H. Watson, MD.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

The descriptions of the houses and estates in the Canon leave us with visions of stately homes and grand settings. When Granada created its Sherlock Holmes series in the 1980s with Jeremy Brett and produced by Michael Cox, part of the lavish production of the shows was the settings chosen for the various locations.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://my.core.com/~jcnash/sherlock_places.html" target="_blank">The Tourist's Sherlock Holmes</a> is a great place to start to give yourself a solid grounding in just where these homes are. In many cases, the actual setting did not match with the geography of the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but gave us a realistic visual setting for the action. The site even has <a href="http://my.core.com/~jcnash/sherlock_graphic.html" target="_blank">a page with a very handy graphic</a> that sorts the filming locations by stories and has links to websites:<br />

Many of these homes are open to the public for touring, and one recently came to our attention: Leighton Hall in Lancashire served as a stand-in for Ridling Thorpe Manor in "The Dancing Men" and is <a href="http://www.lep.co.uk/news/investigate-leighton-hall-on-sherlock-s-anniversary-1-6567210" target="_blank">open throughout the summer season</a>.<div><br /></div><div>Even more comprehensive, impressive, and interactive is the <a href="https://locations.sherlockpodcast.com/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Filming Locations</a> site assembled by the team at <i>The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast</i>.<br />

In the early- to mid-Forties, Edgar W. Smith, the Buttons-cum-Commissionaire of the Baker Street Irregulars, and the first editor of <i><a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, published a short booklet. Titled <i>A Lauristen Garden of Verses</i>, it was printed by the Pamphlet House of Summit, New Jersey and bore the authorship of Helene Yuhasova (who for many years was thought to be a pseudonym of Edgar. We came of age at a time when Saturday evenings at home meant a combination of <i>The Love Boat</i> and <i>Fantasy Island</i>, preceded by <i>The Muppet Show</i>. The format of the show was essentially your standard variety show: a guest star each week, musical numbers, comedy sketches and backstage interactions in front of a "live" audience.<br />
<br />
In this case, we were pleased to find a sketch from Season 1, Episode 3 with guest star Joel Grey (available on DVD: <a href="http://amzn.to/1t0EOsc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>The Muppet Show</i> Season 1</a>). The piece was titled "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Disappearing Clues," starring Rowlf as Sherlock Holmes, Baskerville as Watson, Miss Piggy as the maid and a rather imposing purple monster named Gorgon Heap.<br />

The reason we had never seen it before is because when the program (or more appropriately, programme) aired in the UK, there were fewer commercial spots, so additional footage had to be shot. Such two-minute shorts were <a href="http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/UK_Spots_(The_Muppet_Show)" target="_blank">shown in the UK</a> but not in the United States.<br />
<br />
And a word or two about <a href="http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Baskerville_the_Hound" target="_blank">Baskerville the Hound</a>. Obviously, his name was inspired by <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, but his personality was anything but vicious. This cute little Afghan hound originally appeared with Rowlf in a series of commercials for Purina Dog Chow in 1962 in Canada (which are available on <a href="http://amzn.to/1hES9D6" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>The Muppet Show Season 3</i> on DVD</a>), and then in the first season of <i>Sesame Street</i>. The above episode is his first appearance on <i>The Muppet Show</i>, and he made two other appearances with Rowlf in Season 1, but those were UK spots as well. I write about pastiches here on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, and while pastiches normally refer to written works, a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastiche" target="_blank">pastiche</a> is actually any work of art that imitates the style or character of another. That makes one of my all time favorite shows, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008P9M614?ie=UTF8&camp=213733&creative=393185&creativeASIN=B008P9M614&linkCode=shr&tag=theconblo04-20&creativeASIN=B008P9M614" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">House M.D.</a></i> a pastiche. <br />

Long before Robert Downey Jr., sporting a respectable British accent, took up the role as Sherlock Holmes in 2009, or Benedict Cumberbatch brought the great detective into the 21st century in 2010, or Johnny Lee Miller brought a modern Sherlock to America in 2012 with <i>Elementary</i>, Hugh Laurie, with a spot on American accent in 2004, starred in probably the most subtly-blatant Sherlock Holmes characters of all times, the award winning and internationally successful TV series, <i>House M.D.</i> <br />
<br />
Something that amazed me about the show and its success was how few people knew it was based on Sherlock Holmes (or how many people didn't know Hugh Laurie was British, with a very proper, almost posh accent). <br />
<br />
Ever since the show ended in 2012 many of it's fans (myself included) have been lamenting the passing of the show. And it took a long time for the shows to be released on DVD (I was told this was because of rights disagreements between Fox and NBC Studios), and it took even longer for the show to be made available for streaming online (legally at least). But as of the first of this month, I was thrilled to learn that both <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WCT7M8/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000WCT7M8&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20">Amazon</a> and <a href="http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/House_M.D./70136117?trkid=13462100">Netflix </a>have picked up the show for streaming online. <br />
<br />
For those who were familiar with Doyle's work, the fact that House was a retelling of Sherlock Holmes was probably obvious, but let's look at the evidence:<br />
<ul>
<li>House is a synonym for the Holmes homophone, "homes." </li>
<li>House's best friend, a doctor, is Wilson and Holmes best friend, a doctor is Watson - only two letters different. </li>
<li>In the TV series House uses a cane, while in the books, it's Watson that has a cane. </li>
<li>Both House and Holmes share the love of a musical instrument. For House it's the piano, not the violin. (Side note, Hugh Laurie is also an excellent pianist, which I'm sure is why they chose it.) </li>
<li>Both use narcotics, although Holmes use is limited to when he's not working as a way to fight off boredom, while House uses his pain killers to enable him to work. </li>
<li>They both have little to no interest in the person involved in their investigation, just in solving the case. </li>
<li>While Holmes loved going to the opera, House loved going to monster truck shows. </li>
<li>The original inspiration for Holmes was a doctor. </li>
<li>And like Holmes, House fakes his own death. </li>
</ul>
There are of course many other references and Easter eggs scattered throughout the series but without giving too much away, here are a few of the more obvious ones: women with the last name Adler appear twice, Moriarty is referenced in the end of season two, and in one scene the address on House's drivers license might seem familiar to readers of this blog.<br />
<br />
Many of the pastiche elements are intentionally contradictory to the source of the inspiration. But, to me, that's part of what makes the show so great. It is inspired by the best of Sherlock Holmes, gives a cheeky wink and a nod to other elements, and sticks to the spirit of the consulting directive, but House is its own show and doesn't rely on the connection to Sherlock Holmes to drive the story, just to inspire it.<br />

I will admit to being a neophile – I look forward to hearing about anything new. But, alas, there is not time enough even to begin to keep up with it all. I knew that many different types of fan conventions have been held over the years – back in 1979 I was in San Francisco and accidentally walked into a Star Trek convention. As a reader of science fiction I was aware of <a href="http://www.bouchercon.info/" target="_blank">BoucherCon</a>.  I also vaguely knew that the genre ‘fan fiction’ existed – after all what Sherlockian doesn’t enjoy a good pastiche.<br />
<br />
But I really didn’t know much about the fanatics who follow the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> and have become devotees of the Master – and in ways surprising to this old campaigner.  The city of Atlanta hosted <a href="http://www.221bcon.com/" target="_blank">221B Con</a> on the weekend of April  4-6, 2014 with over 1,000 in attendance. Not surprising, you may say. After all, Sherlock Holmes is beloved by millions, and the BBC series as well as <i>Elementary</i> and the Robert Downey, Jr. movies have generated a fair amount of commentary even amongst curmudgeonly old Sherlockians who may prefer to light up a fine cigar, sip a snifter of brandy and discuss the original stories in the comfort of an over-stuffed leather chair in their club’s private library – not that there is anything wrong with that, as they say on <i>Seinfeld</i>.<br />
<br />
221B Con is in its second year.  In 2013 the organizers, I was informed, expected about 70 attendees – 700 showed up! The 2014 version was, to use my 1960’s parlance, mind-blowing, a real trip, and even psychedelic! Or to use the analogy of a fellow Sherlockian who is also a Lewis Carroll fan, it was a journey “down the rabbit hole” to follow a new trail that has suddenly appeared, solely for the excitement of a surprising adventure and discovery of the unusual. A fan convention, or at least <i>this</i> fan convention, was a combination of presentations, panel discussions, showings of old and new SH media portrayals, book signings, an actual tea party where Mrs. Hudson (Marilynne McKay, BSI, ASH in Victorian costume) helped serve the attendees, performances by the <a href="http://www.artc.org/" target="_blank">Atlanta Radio Theater Company</a> (shades of Friends of Bogey’s on Baker Street!) and the steam-punk band, <a href="http://www.theextraordinarycontraptions.com/" target="_blank">The Extraordinary Contraptions</a>, vendor tables and a costume contest!<br />
<br />
Even at that 1979 Star Trek fancon there were Klingons, Spocks, Kirks, Uhurus, and McCoys in abundance. But imagine my surprise when I walked into the Marriott to be greeted by Hugh Hefner and five Baker Street Bunnies (AKA Cumber-bunnies?) and an <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/04/episode-41-woman.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Irene Adler straight out of BBC <i>Sherlock</i></a>, with riding crop and sheer see-through dominatrix outfit. There were plenty of Sherlocks and Johns, Marys (in their black-op spy outfits), Mrs. Hudsons and even Moose-croft and Deer-lock (don’t make me explain).  Cosplay at 221B Con goes far beyond the wearing of a deerstalker or Inverness cape seen at t<a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">he annual birthday weekend in New York City</a>.  <br />
<br />
Programs included, but not limited to: The Napoleon of Crime, Minorities in Elementary, Canon 101, Brett vs. Rathbone, Holmes Through the Years, Art in the Blood, ACD’s Other Works, From Baker Street to the Holodeck, Teaching Sherlock Holmes, History of Fingerprinting, Burke vs, Hardwicke, Russian Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Occult (at which I presented a recording of a conversation with ACD from the ‘beyond’!). But most of the panels I attended were more like discussions led by the panelists with the audience than they were formal presentations.  And there was SherlockImprov, a live-action combination of cosplay and improv where the audience participated in mini-dramas created on the spot. This was not a sedate discussion of finer points in the Canon. This was 1,000 people showing their love for Holmes and Watson – not to mention a substantial sub-group showing and approving of Sherlock’s love <i>for</i> Watson (shades of Rex Stout who wrote Watson was a woman!). At Fandom Stats – a quantitative look at Sherlock’s fandom – I learned that approximately 35% of fan-written fiction is X-rated!<br />

They were voting for their favorite romantic relation<i>ships</i> – such as JohnLock, gay John and Sherlock, or Mollylock or even the time traveling crossover WhoLock! The fandom at 221B Con is all about diversity.<br />

Every generation is free to keep green the memory of the Master as they see fit. Older generations may chafe at what they consider outlandish interpretations of Holmes and Watson. But in speaking with many of the younger, and mostly female, Sherlockians in attendance I found that as a group they were very aware of the original stories and enjoyed them immensely, that many knew of the ‘traditional’ scion societies and did participate, and were keen researchers of Doyle and all things Sherlockian.<br />
<br />
I was very envious of a young woman who had not yet finished reading all of the original stories – she could pit her deductive skills against Holmes without being aware of the solution to a story’s conundrum. I have often wished that I could have my memory of the stories selectively erased so I could read them anew again and again. Also, as a group, many were <a href="http://ihearofsherlock.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Tumblr</a> users - a platform where they can read and post fanfic, pictures, drawings, links, video or audio clips of their favorite actors or authors.  And while I personally will never wear a hand-knitted camouflage deerstalker, I will always defend another fan’s right to do so!<br />

The original text remains intact -it is only the cover and the blurb that they have "pulp-ified."  Of course, many of the titles chosen for this transformation - from Dickens to Shakespeare - were already considered to be, if not "pulp" fiction, then at the very least popular fiction in their day and age, despite their prestigious status as classics in our time. Nonetheless, it is an intriguing collection.<br />

Thus far, the imprint has only published one Sherlock Holmes title - <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles, </i>with, it seems, no intention of touching upon other works of Sherlock Holmes.The choice is, perhaps, not original,<br />
given detective fiction's history as pulp fiction in the 20th century; nevertheless, for those who collect various editions of the Canon, this would form an interesting counterpart to the more expensive and prestigious editions, such as<a href="http://www.eastonpress.com/Books/prod/BDD/THE-HOUND-OF-THE-BASKERVILLES_2871.aspx"> this version</a> of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles </i>from Easton Press, which has recently come to my attention as a particularly exemplary cause to make the credit card bill of yours truly weep.<br />

Additionally, Oldcastle Books has pulp-ified a number of Victorian titles, from <i>The Picture of Dorian Gray </i>to Dickens and <i>Tess of the D'Urbervilles - </i>providing interesting possibilities for collectors not only of Sherlock Holmes, but of Victorian literature in general.<br />

One also cannot help but notice the striking resemblance between the pulp cover of the Sherlock Holmes novel and some old posters of Basil Rathbone films, which I present for your comparison:<br />

Every generation has its Sherlock Holmes. Gillette. Norwood. Rathbone. Cushing. Wonter. Brett. Livanov. Cumberbatch. Each squarely inhabits a decade or more of being associated with the great detective, and each has left a unique and indelible mark on the role.<br />
<br />
We were fortunate to discover Sherlock Holmes in the Jeremy Brett era. The richness of the earlier Granada episodes, with their faithfulness to the Canon, period setting and excellent cast made for viewing experience that burned him into our minds.<br />
<br />
Brett brought a lot to the role of Sherlock Holmes, but the eccentricities of his portrayal in the waning years of the series may blot out some of the more subtle expressions of character in the earlier ones. We submit that <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcPb4FKUWWM&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">the video below</a>, which is a thoughtful editing of some of these very special moments, should make one think again about the masterful acting skills that Brett brought to the role to form a much more human and fully dimensioned Sherlock Holmes.<br />
