Foreign Editions of the Sherlock Holmes Stories

In fact, there's one Sherlockian out there - Don Hobbs by name - who refers to himself as "The Maniac Collector." It was he who spurred the interest in foreign editions by Dorothy (wife of <a href="http://www.ash-nyc.com/TLStix.htm">Tom</a>, the fourth head of the BSI (from 1987-1997)) Stix. FYI, it was Tom who first extended an invitation to the BSI dinner to us.<br /> <br /> So, as an enthusiastic (albeit slightly nervous) 25 year-old arrived in New York for his first BSI dinner, we was immediately put at ease by Dorothy. While Tom could be an imposing figure for the uninitiated, Dorothy was the Welcome Wagon, the fairy godmother and the diplomat of the pair. We're happy to say that from her retirement home in Florida, Dorothy is occasionally in touch with us via email and is a regular reader of this site. The buzz from the event is still palpable and many Sherlockians attended from around the globe.<br /> <br /> The event was hosted at the Elmer L. Andersen Library at the University of Minnesota, which is noted for its remarkable <a href="http://special.lib.umn.edu/rare/holmes.phtml">Sherlock Holmes Collections</a>, one that is unrivaled anywhere else in the world. The Collections were established in the 1970s with the purchase of James Iraldi's remarkable collection of first editions, then solidified with the bequest of the collection of <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/tradition-heritage/cortisone-discovery.html">Dr. Phillip Hench</a>, who owned <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">four copies</span> of the <a href="http://members.aol.com/shbest/ref/beetons-christmas-annual.htm">Beeton's Christmas Annual</a>, which contained the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. It was solidified with the addition of the Frederic Dorr Steele collection of artwork, the Edith Meiser collection of original radio scripts, and John Bennett Shaw's comprehensive collection of - well, everything.<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: left;"> Victorian Secrets and Edwardian Enigmas: the Riddles of the Rooms of 221B Baker Street was more than a conference, though. It is also a major exhibit at the Andersen that is on display until August 20, 2007, and features miniature and life-sized recreations of 221B Baker Street. Diminutive and unassuming, he was friendly and humble and would always purchase whatever <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/itemsforsale.html">books the BSI had to offer</a>. So imagine my surprise when I read in the catalog that Allen's estate is the largest bequest ever received by the Collections: some five to six thousand volumes of books, as well as numerous videos & DVDs, and original art. One of the prizes is this original drawing of Sherlock Holmes by Sidney Paget, created for "The Adventure of the Red-Headed League."<br /> <blockquote> "All the afternoon he sat in the stalls...enwrapped in the music at St. James’s Hall..." [REDH]</blockquote> This was entirely appropriate, as Allen's investiture was "Sarasate" and he was first a record librarian for WETA of National Public Radio, later becoming an on-air host for several classical music programs.<br /> <br /> While I have not yet had the pleasure of visiting the Sherlock Holmes Collections, I have been lucky enough to meet Tim Johnson, the curator. Tim is erudite and extremely knowledgeable, and the collection is in excellent hands with Tim at the helm. If you'd like to get to know Tim and the collection, I a unique opportunity for you.<br /> <br /> WCCO in Minneapolis did both a television and a radio interview with Tim, which also featured Chris Kehoe, who portrays Holmes in the play <a href="http://www.showboat.umn.edu/sherlock.html">Sherlock's Last Case</a> from June 15 - August 25, 2007. On WCC0 830 AM, <a href="http://www.830wcco.com/pages/3452.php?">Don Shelby</a> - a radio host and TV anchor who really knows his Sherlock Holmes - interviewed Chris and Tim for <a href="http://www.830wcco.com/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=848525">his show on June 29</a>. You'll hear him dig deep for the interview and acknowledge that he's been involved in this scene for some time. Just last Thursday, I had occasion to be New York City for business and I had an impromptu dinner with some of my favorite fellow Sherlockians. The list included a copywriter, a toxicologist, a lawyer and an accountant.<br /> <br /> So imagine our elation (note we didn't say "surprise") when we came across a blog written by <a href="http://www.tomrichmond.com/blog" target="_blank">Tom Richmond</a>, an artist for MAD, Magazine. Tom is a self-professed "humorous illustrator" and he follows in the footsteps, figuratively and stylistically, of some great MAD artists.<br /> <br /> [Side note: Tom later joined us on <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose65" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 65</a>]<br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/170047101&color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%"></iframe><br /></div> <br /> In addition to his artistic abilities, Tom has a turn for Sherlock Holmes. He had written previously about <a href="http://www.tomrichmond.com/blog/?p=850" target="_blank">listening to some audio recordings</a> by David Ian Davies while he worked in the studio. Evidently, Tom was a bit frustrated that, because of the way Davies' various recordings were published, there wasn't a comprehensive, organized Canon even though Davies recorded every story.<br /> <br /> So like any dedicated and enterprising Sherlockian, he took up his pen and wrote to the narrator himself, registering his concern. He requested a collection that would take the listener from start to finish, encompassing all 56 short stories and four novels. Davies responded in kind and as a result, Tom was commissioned to do the cover art for the collection. Talk about an homage!<br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.audible.com/" target="_blank">Audible.com</a> now features this set under the title <em><strong>One Voice Chronological: The Consummate Holmes Collections</strong></em>. In the comments section of <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/07/episode-03-mike-berdan.html">Episode 03</a>, a listener made a suggestion that we cover some basics of the Sherlockian world - what is a scion? What goes on at Sherlockian society events? How do I join one?<br /><br />These are excellent questions, and as Burt and I have been playing the Game for many years, I think we forgot about what it's like to be new at this sort of thing. So, as our commitment to you, our listeners, we'll be putting together a show based on the fundamentals of the Sherlockian world.<br /><br />We've all been there at one point or another: learning about a new subject, trying to understand what the experts are talking about, trying to fit in while feeling terribly left out. We don't wnat this sort of thing to happen to you. So, Burt and I will pull from our own experiences to come up with a laundry list of questions to answer. I thought it was important that I get one in before the day ran out, as it's an auspicious occasion. Today is <a href="http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/070626_lucky_seven.html">Triple Seven day</a> - 07/07/07. Some may take that as a sign of luck, others may take it as an ominous portent. But Sherlockians take it for something entirely different.<br /> <br /> For you see, it was on July 7, 1930 that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died. Which means that today is exactly <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">77 years</span> since his death.<br /> <br /> Think that's creepy? When you consider that Doyle was an ardent spiritualist and attracted to the occult, it's not unlikely that he believed in superstitions related to numbers. We know he touched on the occult/superstitious/other-worldly in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Hound-Baskervilles-Signet-Classics/dp/0451528018/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/103-9734229-0952650?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1183861177&sr=8-4">The Hound of the Baskervilles</a>, "<a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/devi.htm">The Devil's Foot</a>" and "<a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/suss.htm">The Sussex Vampire</a>," in which Sherlock Holmes stated, respectively:<br /> <br /> "I have hitherto confined my investigations to this world."<br /> "I fear that if the matter is beyond humanity it is certainly beyond me."<br /> "The world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply."<br /> <br /> While Holmes himself was grounded in that which could be explained scientifically, it is well-known that Doyle himself fervently believed in contact with those from beyond the grave. Could it be that he'll somehow make himself known to us? The mentions of American locales are scattered throughout the Canon. There are 25 states mentioned - quite an accomplishment, when one considers that there were fewer than 48 states while Conan Doyle was writing - with the Deep South taking up 8 of those slots.<br /><br />It was the Deep South that represented particularly mysterious and misunderstood backgrounds - think <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/five.htm">The Five Orange Pips</a> and <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/yell.htm">The Yellow Face</a> as prime examples. So when new technology combines with masterful insight a la Keefauver, you know it's something worth considering.<br /><br />In one of his entries last week, Brad touched on an idea that I've been considering for a while, but just haven't figured out how to put it to work. As <a href="http://www.bakerstreetblog.com/2007/06/i-hould-be-very-glad-of-little.html">I recently indicated</a>, I'm a little strapped for time. Therefore, I was thrilled when he broached - however preliminarily - the idea of a <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://sherlockpeoria.net/ViewFromSP/ViewSP2007/ViewSP061707.html">Sherlockipedia</a>. Take a look at his perspective and see what you think.<br /><br />The essence of a "wiki" is that the community bands together to use its collective knowledge to create a knowledge base. The most famous of these is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia">Wikipedia</a> (you can see the entry for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes">Sherlock Holmes</a>). The more edited or added to an article is, the more accurate and comprehensive it is.<br /><br />Can you imagine the day that a wiki exists for Sherlockian information? I was originally thinking it would be an online version of the Encyclopedia Sherlockiana, but I quickly realized that it can also serve as a clearing-house for events, societies, famous Sherlockians, online and offline resources, travel tie-ins, books, etc. It's very exciting.<br /><br />I'm looking forward to seeing how all of this will work out and hashing out the details with Brad. Expect to read more about it here, which will certainly include the clarion call for contributions. Let me ask you - would you be willing to apply your expertise to such a project?

But the casting - at least in one regard - is very Sherlockian.<br /><br />Al Rosenblatt, BSI ("Inspector Bradstreet") has informed me that Paxton Whitehead will be appearing at the <a href="http://www.westportplayhouse.org/index.htm">Westport Country Playhouse</a> in Westport, CT from July 12 - July 27, 2007 in <a href="http://www.westportplayhouse.org/relativelyspeaking.htm">Relatively Speaking</a>, a comedy.<br /><br />According to the site, the plot goes something like this:<br /><blockquote>Greg falls madly for Ginny whose affections are elsewhere. Greg follows Ginny when she goes on an unexpected visit to ‘see her parents.’ Meanwhile, Philip suspects his wife, Sheila, is having an affair. Sheila is not the least bit suspicious of Philip. Could Sheila and Philip both be wrong? Who are Philip and Sheila’s unexpected guests for Sunday lunch?<br /> <br /> <strong style="font-weight: normal;">A marvelous mixture of misunderstandings, mistaken identities and incriminating slippers.</strong><br /></blockquote>No word whether Mr. Whitehead is playing Greg or Phillip (or Ginny or Sheila, for that matter). It was a trial, an experiment, a unique and new way of informing Sherlockians on a variety of topics.<br /><br />Couple that with the lightning-like evolution of new media in a fairly short period of time and what you've been lucky enough to witness is a revolution in the way we communicate. The different tools and widgets that have sprouted in the sidebar are testament to that.<br /><br />So when I started taking data from Ron Fish's comprehensive master <a href="http://sherlockiancalendar.homestead.com/">Calendar of Sherlockian Events</a> and integrated it with a <a href="http://www.google.com/calendar/render?cid=sherlockian.calendar%40gmail.com">Google calendar</a>, I thought it was simply another outgrowth of the process. I liked the idea of using the Google version, because it allows me to show dates directly on this blog and has a traditional calendar-style approach.<br /><br />But I've come to a point where I can't manage the Google calendar any more. So here are my questions for you, dear readers:<br /><ol><li>Should I abandon the Google calendar entirely?</li><li>If not, is there someone who would be willing to help out with inputting the dates? (It's very basic)</li><li>If so, would the use of another application with a calendar plug-in feature, such as <a href="http://upcoming.yahoo.com/">Upcoming</a> be a feasible approach?</li></ol>I realize that some of this may sound like mumbo-jumbo to some of you. "We All Turned Round at the Words" [REDC]

Other than early issues, The Baker Street Journal has tended to stay away from pastiches, or stories written about Sherlock Holmes in the style of Doyle. Call it the purists in us, or call it the lack of editorial space that those early volumes so plentifully offered (remember too that they bankrupted publisher Ben Abramson).<br /><br />I was recently contacted by Mark Wardecker to see if I knew if the BSJ would run a pastiche that he had written. I let him know that it wouldn't. While I don't typically enjoy that form of Sherlockian work myself, nor do I wish this blog to be a repository of the same, I did take a quick look at what he had done with "The Adventure of the Second Round." Mark describes it as follows:<br /><blockquote>This particular story is set very late, just before Watson's last marriage and Holmes' subsequent retirement. Once again, Holmes and Watson find themselves "moving in high life" (ABBE) after they are called in by the Yard to help solve a murder in Kensington.<br /></blockquote>Like I said, I'm not a fan of this particular genre - I'm a Canonical purist. As a rule, writers that attempt to mimic Conan Doyle's unique and sparse style usually fall short. With very few words (as opposed to his Victorian colleagues such as Dickens or Trollope), he managed to set vivid scenes for us. And most writers just can't accomplish it in the same facile way the Doyle did.<br /><br />While it is an admirable first attempt, Wardecker's work is no exception to this rule. You'll find that is is about 90% dialog (I don't know the exact figures, but I know Doyle used significantly more narrative in his work). It's very believable as far as that goes, but there are certain turns of phrase that mark it as alternatively modern or stilted, which is another hallmark of pastiches.<br /><br />I'd recommend that you take a look at it yourselves, because your enjoyment of it may be far different than my own. Can it be that four years have lapsed since the "From Gillette to Brett" conference held in Indianapolis? The answer would appear to be "yes," as that remarkable event - which featured an appearance by Edward Hardwicke, who played Dr. Watson to Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes - occurred in 2003.<br /><br />Wessex Press (aka Steve Doyle and Mark Gagen, both members of the Baker Street Irregulars) have announced <a href="http://www.wessexpress.com/">From Gillette to Brett II</a>, being held in Indianapolis, Indiana from November 16-18, 2007. Their website has all of the information, but here's the official announcement:<br /><blockquote>In 2003 Wessex Press sponsored one of the most memorable Sherlockian conferences of all time. Devoted to Sherlock Holmes on stage, screen, television, and radio, From Gillette to Brett featured a film festival, Sherlockian vendors, and an all-star roster of distinguished speakers and presenters. What Is a Podcast?

If you've ever listened to audio over your computer, then you're halfway there.<br /><br />The beauty of podcasts is you can get episodes delivered to you without having to go looking for them. It's like having a newspaper on your doorstep rather than having to trudge out to the corner store. And here's the kicker: they're <span style="font-weight: bold;">free</span>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Do I need an iPod to listen or subscribe to a podcast?</span><br />Not at all. You can listen right on your computer. Or your mobile phone. Or you can download it to the MP3 player of your choice. Many people use the earbuds and carry them around while walking, gardening or exercising. Others get an adapter and listen to shows in the car (it's ruined me for traditional radio), or plug their iPods into a system on their kitchen countertop. I've even seen a model for use in the pool.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">What kinds of shows can I listen to?</span><br />This one, for starters! If you can think of it, odds are someone is doing a podcast about it. Harry Potter? Wodehouse, pin collecting, the <span style="font-style: italic;">Titanic</span>, antiques, handwriting analysis, coin and stamp collecting, woodworking, needlepoint, jewelry making, wine, pipe collecting, music, period firearms, Victorian attire - the list goes on and on. Upon finishing the article, it seemed that it had been written for anyone who has attended a BSI Weekend in the past. A few of the familiar landmarks that made the C-J's list:<br /> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.algonquinhotel.com/">The Algonquin Hotel</a>, the oldest still-operating hotel in New York and the birthplace of the New Yorker. It is also the unofficial headquarters of the BSI during our January weekends.</li> <li><a href="http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/">McSorley's Old Ale House</a>, which usually plays host to the conclusion of the Christopher Morley Walk, is noted for its very reasonably-priced food.</li> <li><a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/">The Mysterious Bookshop</a> is Otto Penzler's book-lover's haven, now transplanted in a trendy TriBeCa neighborhood. Although it's slightly out of the way, Otto's hospitality and tremendous selection make it worth the trip.</li> </ul> Print out the original article and file it away for January. You'll find yourself making a checklist of these places and being able to get through quite a bit of it. This week, I received <a href="http://www.sshf.com/index.php3?file=news&num=595">a significant announcement</a> (click here for <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.sshf.com/index.php3%3Ffile%3Dnews%26num%3D595">the translated version</a>) from our friends at the Société Sherlock Holmes de France: they have launched their very first Holmesian publication, called <span style="font-style: italic;">Le quinCahier</span>. Félicitations a mes amis!<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.sshf.com/design/pub_mag1.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.sshf.com/design/pub_mag1.jpg" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px;" /></a><br />The magazine, lavishly produced in color, is free for members of the SSHF and contains all sorts of Sherlockian material, from news to music and book reviews, recaps of events to scholarship, and much, much more. And of course, it wouldn't be a SSHF publication without unique artwork by Jean-Pierre Cagnat.<br /><br />The cost of a single issue is 12€ for non-European subscribers, or 30€ for four issues per year.
