Whelan, BSI (“Vincent Spaulding”), who served as “Wiggins,” or head of the Baker Street Irregulars, for 23 years.</p><p>We're still gathering our thoughts around this news, as it is as personal as it is profound. It was under Mike's leadership in 2001 that your editor received his investiture, <span style="text-align: center;">“</span>Corporal Henry Wood.<span style="text-align: center;">”</span></p><p>Mike was the second-longest serving head of the BSI (Julian Wolff served 26 years, from 1960-1986). And in his time, it is fair to say that he transformed the BSI. He approached it with a businessman's eye and acumen, delegating much of the responsibilities to eager volunteers. His accomplishments are legion.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“all they want is organisation<span style="text-align: center;">” [STUD]</span></h3><p>Mike squarely positioned the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a> as a literary society, shaping its focus and giving the organization ten so-called exemplars that members should strive for:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Promote and nurture Grand Game scholarship</li><li>Diverse, exceptional, merit-based membership—not elitist </li><li>Kind, welcoming clubbability with joyful, whimsical environment </li><li>Altruistic volunteerism—giving more than you receive—“society above self” </li><li>Aspirational, not reactionary </li><li>Inherent modesty vs. taking oneself too seriously </li><li>Extremely high standards—reject “good enough” </li><li>Societal leadership fiscally responsible—sufficient funds maintained to
accomplish most, if not all, objectives </li><li>Societal and member Sherlockian charitable generosity </li><li>No politics and no contentious agendas </li></ul><p></p><p>Having such guiding principles and aspirations give any organization and its members the impetus to constantly challenge themselves to do better. And that's what Mike wanted.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“I have been guilty of several monographs” [BRUC]</h3><p>Mike took what was once a side-interest of the BSI and turned it into a central focus: the small red-backed volumes that Edgar W. Smith (the BSI's Commissionaire from 1940-1960) published and that the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/history/" target="_blank">BSI Archival Series</a> echoed became the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/the-bsi-press/" target="_blank">BSI Press</a> under Mike's leadership.</p><p>The BSI Press became a powerhouse of a small press publisher, cranking out more than 60 volumes. From the BSI Archival Series that focus on the history of the organization to the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/international/" target="_blank">BSI Manuscript Series, BSI International Series</a>, and <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/professions/" target="_blank">BSI Professions Series</a>, Sherlockians worldwide were given a chance to read more deeply about Sherlock Holmes.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“a series of events” [DEVI]</h3><p>The famed <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-weekend/" target="_blank">BSI Weekend</a> was always the centerpiece of the BSI's year, but Mike sought to extend the BSI's geographical presence beyond New York City. He tapped various members across the country to develop associated excursions every few years. Some of these included:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/09/episode-104-sherlockians-at-chautauqua.html" target="_blank">The Mind and Art of Sherlock Holmes</a> (Chautauqua, NY, 2016)</li><li>Sherlock Holmes: Behind the Canonical Screen (UCLA, 2012 )</li><li>A Tangled Skein – A Study in Scarlet Expedition (Salt Lake City, UT, 2008)</li><li>Murderland – The Valley of Fear Expedition (PA, 2004)</li></ul><p></p><p>Each of these had <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/event+books/" target="_blank">an accompanying publication</a> that captured the scholarship shared at the associated event.</p><p>At the BSI Weekend itself, Mike established the BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture, to kick off the events on Thursday evening. This event brought in an author to talk about their particular area of focus.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“for the sake of the trust” [MUSG]</h3><p>In addition to events and publications, Mike's crowning achievement was the establishment of the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars Trust</a>. The BSI Trust is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose purpose is "to collect, preserve, and provide access to historical documents, correspondence, papers, photos, recordings, and memorabilia relating to the BSI and its members and friends."</p><p>As part of that mission, the Trust established the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/archive.html" target="_blank">BSI Archive</a> first at the Houghton Library at Harvard University, and then moved to the Lilly Library at Indiana University.</p><p>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere was at the opening celebration, "Building an Archive," and reported on it in <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose180">Episode 180</a>. He went everywhere, saw everything, and overheard everyone in his mission to keep green the Master's memory. </p><p>And while he was the first to admit that his role was one of a "benevolent dictator," he did more to empower individuals to contribute to the future of the BSI than anyone before. He rightly observed that he viewed his role as one of a steward, a temporary leader, on the evolution of the institution.</p><p>He had a succession plan, leaving Michael Kean, BSI (“General Gordon”), who had led the publications arm, in charge of the organization — a multi-year plan with plenty of coordination and collaboration. When he handed over the reins, Mike was confident in the direction and stewardship of the BSI under Michael Kean's leadership.</p><p><br /></p><p>Mike closed his final letter to the BSI membership:<br /></p><blockquote>“And so, dear fellow members, this is the last formal “Wiggins” letter I’ll be sending to the membership. It has been a great ride. My deepest thanks to Irregulars whose special support made my job easier and made me look better than I was. Special thanks to Mary Ann, my spouse of 43 years, who steadfastly supported me during my journey as Wiggins, and toiled in the BSI vineyard, the extent to which no one may ever fully realize. I’ve made many lifelong friends from all over the world in this Sherlockian universe of ours. What a job it has been, if you can call it a job… more, a joy. It actually was a grand privilege running the BSI, a literary society like none other.”</blockquote><p>We will miss Mike's presence, both in person and in spirit, at the BSI. It was a momentous occasion, as Kean is only the sixth head of the BSI since its founding in 1934.</p><p>Burt and Scott had an opportunity to speak with Michael on a wide range of topics, including his Sherlockian origins (which were induced rather than pursued), his career in the publishing industry, early days in Sherlockian scions, and his role with the BSI Press.</p><p>Michael also takes us behind the scenes to give us the story of his selection as the next BSI, going back a number of years. We discuss his vision for the role of a literary society in the twenty-first century and more pointedly, the difficult decision to make the 2021 BSI Weekend a virtual affair.</p><p>Also covered is our upcoming 200th episode: we are looking for your feedback. At the annual dinner of the <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a>, the organization's "Wiggins," Michael Whelan, turned over leadership to his replacement, Michael Kean, BSI ("General Charles Gordon").<br />
<br />
The last time leadership changed was when Tom Stix, Jr. left the post in 1997. He inherited the role from <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/16/obituaries/dr-julian-wolff-85-led-a-club-for-fans-of-sherlock-holmes.html" target="_blank">Julian Wolff</a> in 1986, who had assumed command after the untimely death of Edgar W. Smith in 1960. Smith led the BSI beginning in <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/03/the-1940-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">1940</a>, after he convinced Christopher Morley to bring the group back after a three-year hiatus of its annual dinner.<br />
<br />
Having only six leaders in an 86-year period is remarkable for any organization. And with the elevation of Kean to the role of Wiggins, the BSI is in good hands, particularly with regard to its publishing activities. He is a retired publishing executive and has served the BSI Press for many years, now as Co-Publisher.<br />

Burt and Scott ventured to Bloomington, Indiana for the Baker Street Irregulars' conference "Building an Archive" at the Lilly Library at Indiana University. It was an event filled with conversations and exhibitions that delighted all, collectors or not.<br />

The event was the celebration of the BSI Archive officially opening at the Lilly. It featured a walk-through the exhibition "The History of the BSI Through 221 Objects" and a number of panels about the archive, collecting, collectors and more.<br />

Since the introduction of Netscape to navigate the Internet in 1994 and pay-to-access services like Prodigy, AOL and Compuserve even earlier in the 1990s, the world has been moving to digital communications.<br />
<br />
But the world of Sherlockians has traditionally moved at its own pace. In a world where "it's always 1895," as <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/10/celebrate-national-poetry-day.html" target="_blank">the Vincent Starrett poem</a> goes, it's not surprising that the Baker Street Irregulars have taken their time establishing a web presence.<br />

<h3>
<b>“These relics have a history then?”</b></h3>
When your editor was invested into the BSI in 2001, one of our first suggestions was establishing a web presence — at least for the <i><a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Journal</a></i>, since the organization was planning to sell CD-ROMs of the BSJ's holdings from 1946-2000. It made perfect sense to sell online something that required a computer to use.<br />
<br />
In doing so, we established and designed the site <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/" target="_blank">bakerstreetjournal.com</a>, where we implemented PayPal for electronic payments, offered excerpts from previous issues, a table of contents for the current issue, and allowed subscribers to create automatically renewing subscriptions. The site first launched with the ability to purchase subscriptions, get back issues, and buy the CD-ROM. You can view <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20010717133833/http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com:80/" target="_blank">what it first looked like on July 17, 2001, via the Wayback Machine</a>.<br />

We soon added the BSI History Series, edited by Jon Lellenberg, the BSI Manuscript Series, the BSI International Series, and entire articles that won the Morley-Montgomery Award. We played with the design a bit — electing to stay with the BSJ's canary yellow theme for a while. Fast forward to <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20060721090045/http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com:80/" target="_blank">July, 2006</a> and you'll find that the site underwent a considerable overhaul. We adopted the BSI's colors of <a href="http://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/2017/03/10-dressing-gown-of-many-colors.html" target="_blank">blue, purple, and mouse</a>, and added some additional navigation. We noted that change on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere on July 13, 2006 in the article <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/07/makes-considerable-difference-to-me-bosc_13.html#.W1DyVtIzrb0" target="_blank">"It Makes a Considerable Difference to Me" [BOSC]</a>.<br />

When work responsibilities became too much for us in 2008, we turned over the reins to Randall Stock, BSI ("South African Securities"), who has ably guided the site through its many updates since then. He created sections for the eBSJ, the expanded Manuscript Series and associated titles, and the events that the BSI hosts as well. It became clear in recent years that the content had outgrown the site, as the BSJ domain was doing more than simply promoting the <i>Journal</i>.<br />
<br />
Not to mention the separate site that accurately and comprehensively captures the breadth of the <a href="http://bsitrust.org/" target="_blank">BSI Trust</a>, including excerpts from the BSI's Oral History project and information on every BSI Dinner since 1934. Regular visitors to our site may find the layout and navigation of the BSI Trust site slightly familiar...<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b>“</b><b>a new experience</b><b>”</b><b> [LAST]</b></h3>
Under the capable leadership of <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose71" target="_blank">Mike Whelan</a> as the BSI's "Wiggins," the Baker Street Irregulars have flourished in the last 20 years. The BSI Trust was established to house the BSI's archives and historical material, which has now found a new home at the Lilly Library. The BSI Press has become a publishing powerhouse, with over 60 titles in an ever-expanding set of categories. The BSI Weekend is much more than a weekend, and involves many satellite events stretching from Wednesday to Sunday of the "weekend." Plus, the BSI holds events that are more along the lines of expeditions every few years. And of course, the BSJ continues on its heralded quarterly schedule.<br />
<br />
With so much information to convey, it became clear that the BSJ site couldn't continue to shoulder it all; and frankly, the site was much more than just the Baker Street Journal — it was doubling as the BSI's website.<br />
<br />
And with that, Randall and team worked tirelessly over the last year or so to design and build the new <a href="http://www.bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars website</a> at <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">bakerstreetirregulars.com</a>.<br />
<br />
If you head over there, you'll see a clearly laid-out page that has links to sections like <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/the-bsi-press/" target="_blank">BSI Books</a>, including a number of series: Manuscript, International, Events and Expeditions, Professions, History and Biography, and more. There's a section for <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-event-dates/" target="_blank">BSI Events</a>, including the BSI Weekend and other special events and expeditions. And of course, the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/the-baker-street-journal/" target="_blank">BSJ</a> has its own section as well. The BSI Trust will continue to be maintained as a separate site.<br />
<br />
As with the initial launch of the original BSJ site in 2001, this is a first pass. We're sure there will be improvements along the way. But the clarity that it brings to the Baker Street Irregulars brand is encouraging.<br />
<br />
The time was right — actually, it was downright overdue — to inform the world of all of the wonderful things for which the Baker Street Irregulars are responsible. We hope that, through the hard work of everyone associated with this project, Sherlockians everywhere will appreciate the tireless and unyielding work of keeping green the memory of Sherlock Holmes.<br />

Well, we managed to do it. And it only took us nine years, an 18-month hiatus, one lost episode and thousands of fans.<br />

We asked you what you wanted to hear for the centenary of the first podcast for Sherlock Holmes devotees, and time and again, we heard from you, telling us to do a retrospective - a look back at our favorite moments from what we've accomplished. We also asked you what your favorite moments are and what you wanted to know from us. Well, we managed to deliver on both.<br />

Our 100th episode gave us a chance to reflect on exactly what turning 100 means, and to dive back into our murky and fuzzy origins. We try to answer some of your queries and we celebrate those who joined us previously before launching into our top memories of the show, as represented in audio clips. Our Gas-Lamp features two readings, including a new one created just for this episode. Finally, we wrap up with a couple of important announcements that you won't want to miss.<br />
