On a personal note, we had occasion to visit Philadelphia and attend a dinner of the <a href="http://sonsofthecopperbeeches.homestead.com/" style="color: rgb(0 , 0 , 102); font-weight: bold;">Sons of the Copper Beeches</a>, a 60 year-old scion society that is thriving under the able leadership of Headmastiff Gideon Hill, BSI.<br />
<br />
Among those in attendance was Michael Whelan, the "Wiggins" (the titular head) of the Baker Street Irregulars.  Mike made some great remarks about Sherlockians and the Great Game that are worth paraphrasing here.  Among them:<br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">A general truth:</span> at times, we take the Game seriously, but as a rule, Sherlockians generally enjoy themselves.  One thing all scion societies have in common, whether they are six decades or six months old, is the desire for fellowship - that quiet confidence and satisfaction that we engage in a common interest.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">An observation:</span> that with over 400 Sherlockian/Holmesian societies worldwide, over 300 of them are in the United States.  Why is it that more than 70% of the world's Sherlockian groups are in our backyard?<br />
<br />
<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">A reminder:</span> the Baker Street Irregulars is not simply a group of people who gather once a year for a dinner in New York.  The BSI are not "Jupiter descending," as Holmes once referred to Mycroft coming to Baker Street - they are people in your midst at every meeting; Sherlockians, like you, who have a sincere interest in the stories and in each other.</blockquote>
We can highly recommend Philadelphia and its Sherlockians.  The next time you're in town, consider getting in touch with Gideon Hill.  You won't regret it.<br />

Well, we managed to do it. And it only took us nine years, an 18-month hiatus, one lost episode and thousands of fans.<br />
<br />
That's right, it's our <b><span style="font-size: large;">100th</span></b> episode.<br />
<br />
We asked you what you wanted to hear for the centenary of the first podcast for Sherlock Holmes devotees, and time and again, we heard from you, telling us to do a retrospective - a look back at our favorite moments from what we've accomplished. We also asked you what your favorite moments are and what you wanted to know from us. Well, we managed to deliver on both.<br />
<br />
Our 100th episode gave us a chance to reflect on exactly what turning 100 means, and to dive back into our murky and fuzzy origins. We try to answer some of your queries and we celebrate those who joined us previously before launching into our top memories of the show, as represented in audio clips. Our Gas-Lamp features two readings, including a new one created just for this episode. Finally, we wrap up with a couple of important announcements that you won't want to miss.<br />

Well, to call it a web site is really understating the effort Ann M. Lewis has put into it. It's much more than a simple destination; it's more of a hub and a two-way communication vehicle for this venerable Midwest scion society. This is a great example of how a scion society should embrace interactive media and forge into the 21st century.<br /><br />Expect to hear more about new developments in the Sherlockian world that are going to shift the way we think about online communications. I'll be covering these changes and announcements here as well as on <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/">I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</a>, which I'd love you to subscribe to.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Features Abound</span><br />You'll find all of the standard offerings there, like meeting updates, upcoming events, links, etc. But where this site stands apart is how it integrates aspects of social media. For example:<br /><ol><li>You can register on the site as a member. It's free and doesn't require any sensitive information from you. Registration allows you to interact with other members on the site. You can post information to your profile, such as a web site, email address, or just something you'd like to write about yourself, as well as a picture.<br /></li><li>Everyone can view the photo gallery, and members can upload their own photos. It's a great place to put faces to names or to see what happened at events.</li><li>There is a section for articles and a downloads section which currently contains a PDF of the society's flyer.</li><li>A news section contains announcements of meetings as well as the latest trailer for the <a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/g2b.html">From Gillette to Brett II</a> conference. Anyone in the community can also add their own news story as well.</li><li>You can contribute in another important way: in the section called Blogs. <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Every member can create his or her own entries and write about and share anything that comes to mind.</span> You know I couldn't resist and opportunity like that. <a href="http://www.illustriousclients.org/index.php?name=Blogs&mode=display&id=1">Here's what I wrote</a>.</li><li>There's an RSS feed of both this blog and of my podcast, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/"></a>for which I am grateful. Indeed, this is the home turf of Mike Whelan, the head of <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/">the Baker Street Irregulars</a>.<br /><br />I'm glad to see that they've come blazing into the 21st century with a real winner of a site. Get over there and register. More importantly, join the conversation there, or here, or any other site that allows you to raise your voice. The wonder of the Sherlockian world is the degree with which we interact with each other, and current technology is giving us the opportunity to keep the conversation flowing 24/7.

Mr Ruber was best known in Sherlockian circles for his work as a Vincent Starrett scholar, having edited the remarkable tribute volume <a href="http://www.batteredbox.com/VincentStarrett/03-Starrett.htm"><i>The Last Bookman: A Journey Into the Life & Times of Vincent Starrett (Author-Journalist-Bibliophile)</i></a> (1968) with an introduction by Christopher Morley and contributions from over 20 friends and admirers ranging from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Derleth">August Derleth</a> to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sandburg">Carl Sandburg</a>, as well as being the first editor of <a href="http://www.batteredbox.com/PDFs/The%20Vincent%20Starrett%20Memorial%20Library.pdf"><i>The Vincent Starrett Memorial Library Series</i></a>, the collected works of Starrett published over the years by <a href="http://www.batteredbox.com/VincentStarrett/">The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box</a>. Sherlockian.net announced a recent collaboration with <a href="https://twitter.com/mistyzeo">Elinor Gray</a> consisting of a new feature called "<a href="http://sherlockian.net/pastiches/fanfic.html" style="font-weight: bold;">Fanfic List and Commentary</a>". As a companion to the new fanfic page on <b><a href="https://twitter.com/darkgreendesk" target="_blank">Chris Redmond</a></b>'s perennially relevant Sherlock website, Ms Gray compiled an extensive database of Sherlockian-centric fanfic available for download as a spreadsheet titled <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aqq83J52pRS1dE0tYzZKbEEtOUtNWjY4TDdSWnhldEE&usp=sharing#gid=0"><i>Sherlock Fandom Classics</i></a> which can be sorted by title, author or even by sub-fandom category. The list is made up of Gray's own preferences as well as those of her fandom comrades on Twitter, LiveJournal and Tumblr. For those new to the wide and wonderful world of Sherlock fanfic, a good starting point is AO3's "<a href="http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Sherlock%20Holmes%20*a*%20Related%20Fandoms/works">Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms</a>" which contains 54,317 (and counting) fanworks all of which can be sorted and filtered using criteria such as Categories (M/M, F/M, F/F, etc.), Fandom Type (Sherlock TV, ACD, Elementary, and crossovers such as Sherlock/Doctor Who, Sherlock/Harry Potter, etc.), Characters, Relationships (Holmes/Watson, Mycroft/Lestrade, Moran/Moriarty, etc.) plus additional tags such as Angst, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Alternate Universe, Post-Reichenbach, etc. I even found a story inspired by Vincent Starrett's <i>221B</i> entitled "<a href="http://archiveofourown.org/works/382597">Always 1895</a>" by <b>Aurora_Kira</b> that's Rated: Mature; Relationship: M/M; Fandoms: Sherlock (TV), Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms; Relationship: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson; additionally tagged: 'Angsty Goodness but Wait There’s More,' 'John and Sherlock Heart Each Other,' '“Who Never Lived and So Can Never Die,”' 'Old Poetry Kicks Ass.' My only real complaint is that the author doesn't mention the color of Holmes' dressing gown which, based on the tone of the piece, I presume to be mouse-colored. To give you some perspective: remember when you thought Philip K. Jones' <a href="http://sherlock-holmes.es/database.php">database of Sherlockian pastiches</a>, clocking in at over 10K entries, was mind-boggling insane? Well, that's not even a drop in the fanfic bucket. (On a personal note, I admit that for the briefest of moments I considered writing a Sherlock/<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fringe_(TV_series)"><i>Fringe</i></a> crossover story but alas I fear the world is not yet prepared - not to mention there already exists, I kid you not, <a href="https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Fringe/works">1,536 entries for <i>Fringe</i> + Sherlock crossover fanfic</a> (!) on AO3.)</div>

<a href="http://www.constructionweekonline.com/article-26917-sherlock-holmes-theme-park-to-open-in-england/" target="_blank">Construction Week Online reported</a> that "A $40 million theme park celebrating the life of the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes is set to be built in Portsmouth, England, where author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - who created the character in 1887 - used to live." [<i>Editor's note</i>: <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/02/what-would-sherlock-holmes-theme-park.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">we covered that here</a>.]<br />

I was rather dubious upon first hearing about the proposed Portsmouth-based Sherlockian amusement park, but recent articles in places as diverse as <a href="http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2014/02/portsmouth-announces-25m-sherlock-holmes-theme-park/"><i>BBC America</i></a>, <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2561719/Sherlock-theme-park-Detective-set-25m-attraction-plot-enactments-holograms-bringing-characters-life.html"><i>Daily Mail</i></a> and <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2014/02/26/sherlock-holmes-theme-park-set-to-open-in-england/"><i>Fox News</i></a> all point to the truth of this rather bizarre undertaking. So what can we expect from a Holmes theme park? According to the Portsmouth Cultural Partnership's Steve Pitt: "What we are talking about is a world class, Sherlock Holmes experience." Most of the reports allude to the park containing rides and hi-tech holograms of Holmes, Watson and friends solving crimes and living the Baker Street lifestyle.<br />

If I were called upon to design aspects of the park, you could be sure Sherlock Land (or whatever) would be packed with Canonical references and themes at every turn. One ride would mimic Disneyland's <a href="http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Mad_Tea_Party">Mad Hatter Tea Party</a> but instead of oversized teacups, riders would sit inside giant spinning deerstalkers. 'Watson's Guide to the Turf' - based on SILV and SHOS - would give riders the chance to sit atop Silver Blaze or Shoscombe Prince (or Desborough, Pugilist, etc.) in a mock race. For those looking for a little more excitement, 'The Reichenbach Fall' would strap riders into a box that ascends to a height of 221 feet on a faux waterfall, pausing just long enough to hear a pre-recording of Moriarty's dialogue from FINA, then plunge straight down into artificial mist. The 'Mind Palace' house of mirrors would be fun for the whole family where as the 'Valley of Fear Coaster' would feature a roller coaster made to look like a harrowing coal mining car run amuck as animatronic Scowrers attempt to behead riders at every turn.<br />

Games such as 'The Six Napoleon Smash-Up,' 'Black Peter's Harpoon-o-rama', 'Find the Missing Carbuncle,' 'Col. Moran's Big Game Hunt and Air-Gun Shooting Gallery', etc. would entertain those uninterested in rides. I'll end my speculation (for now - but <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/02/what-would-sherlock-holmes-theme-park.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">other readers have contributed numerous options here</a>) and leave you with a quote from <i>Fox News</i> that most likely sums up what we're all really thinking: "<a href="http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2014/02/26/sherlock-holmes-theme-park-set-to-open-in-england/" target="_blank">From the sound of it, the park is going to be anything but elementary</a>." Doyleockian considers the interest Sherlockians have for the home life of Holmes in "<a href="http://alistaird221b.blogspot.com/2014/03/a-study-in-domesticity.html" target="_blank"><b>A Study In Domesticity</b></a>", suggesting that due to the relatively sparse, though tantalizing, tidbits of information revealed throughout the Canon, readers' imaginations are given free reign to speculate as much as their heart's desire. Though hard data concerning the domestic lives of Holmes and Watson is scarce, descriptions of the contents of 221B can certainly be found among the 60 stories. It should be no surprise that Sherlockian scholars have made multiple attempts to systematically and exhaustively enumerate the contents of 221B Baker Street, two of the most successful being <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1233496.The_Baker_Street_File"><i>The Baker Street File</i></a> (1982/2002) and Clarkson's <a href="http://www.librarything.com/work/5821375"><i>The Canonical Compendium</i></a> (1999).<br />

<a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/blog/2014/2/8/so-you-want-to-collect-books-by-vincent-starrett"><b>Studies in Starrett</b></a> posted a list of essential books written and edited by Vincent Starrett, most of which should reside in every respectable Sherlockian's library. First and foremost is Starrett's brilliant <a href="http://www.wessexpress.com/html/privatelife.html"><i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i></a> (1933/1960), a tome unrivaled in historical importance that's just as relevant and fresh today as it was upon it's release in 1933. Wessex Press released a 75-year anniversary facsimile edition, edited by 'Studies in Starrett' proprietor <a href="https://twitter.com/BooksandBipeds">Ray Betzner</a>, which is almost as awesome as owning the first edition (and thanks to a truly generous and remarkable Sherlockian I'm fortunate enough to actually own a first edition) and should be at the top of every burgeoning Sherlockian's want list. Almost as essential is Starrett's edited collection of early Sherlockian papers entitled <a href="http://www.amazon.com/221-Studies-Sherlock-Penzlers-Library/dp/1883402077"><i>221B, Studies in Sherlock Holmes by Various Hands</i></a> (1940). Collecting some of the greatest minds from the golden age of Sherlockiana, Starrett's collection is still one of the greatest readers in Sherlockian scholarship available - thankfully republished as an affordable paperback by <a href="http://www.librarything.com/topic/122167">Otto Penzler's Sherlock Holmes Library</a>. The Island Now, a local Long Island news source, <a href="http://www.theislandnow.com/great_neck/news/article_e204b96a-a560-11e3-8173-001a4bcf887a.html" target="_blank">ran a lengthy article on Sherlockian <b>Terry Hunt</b></a> and his recent elevation into the ranks of the Baker Street Irregulars this past January, receiving the titular investiture of "The Something Hunt" (a quote from HOUN). Hunt first encountered the Canon in 5th grade though it wasn't until the last decade that he became involved with the BSI: </div>

My favorites include: 10) missing the emotional context behind cases, 9) terrorizing a hallucinating John, 8) humiliating Sally Donovan (and Anderson) in front of her colleagues, 7) denying he has friends to John, 5) belittling Molly Hooper, 3) failing to tell John they weren't going to die in the Tube, 2) using Janine (<i>à la</i> Escott the plumber in MILV) and 1) failing to understand why John might be upset in the immediate aftermath of presenting himself as definitely not-dead. Though I don't agree with every item on here, I would suggest this list to be mandatary reading for any mainstream news outlet planning on running a segment about the recent upsurge in Holmes popularity. A. M.) Webster. There's quite a bit of ACD Olympics lore out there and this piece by Tim "I have the greatest job in the Universe" Johnson is a great place to start.<br />

It's a nice article but make sure to read the comments which had me in stitches. Then check out <a href="https://twitter.com/BradKeefauver">Brad Keefauver</a>'s latest post on <a href="http://sherlockpeoria.blogspot.com/2014/03/when-less-that-great-wont-do.html"><b>Sherlock Peoria</b></a> which was inspired by the above review of "The One Percent Solution" for the full experience. Mark my words, in a few years when Sherlock Holmes goes back out of style you're going to desperately miss these fun little sparks ignited by mainstream pop culture bumping-up against our little, die-hard Sherlockian world. <br />

Do we really need 'outsiders' putting together a massive Sherlock-themed event when there are already a wide variety of high quality, intellectually stimulating, homegrown Sherlock gatherings such as <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/bsiweekend.html">BSI Weekend</a>, <a href="http://www.scintillation.org/">Scintillation of Scions</a>, <a href="http://www.221bcon.com/">221B Con</a>, Wessex Press' <a href="http://www.wessexpress.com/html/g2b4.html">From Gillette to Brett IV: Basil, Benedict & Beyond</a>, and numerous other Sherlockian events that have taken place around the world for decades prior to a corporate group of "specialist producers"? On the other hand, maybe a professional group would put together an event entirely different than anything we're used to, mustering resources above and beyond what is available to the average Sherlockian? I'm keeping an open mind and will be curious to see how 'Sherlocked' develops - and I'm equally curious to see how the Sherlockian internet reacts.</div>

<a href="https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=markgatissintroducestheprivatelifeofsherlockholmes"><b>BFI Films</b></a> announced a screening of Billy Wilder's incredibly brilliant <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Private_Life_of_Sherlock_Holmes"><i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i></a> on April 9, 2014 at 8:20 PM at <a href="http://www.bfi.org.uk/">BFI Southbank</a>, London. Wilder's take on Holmes, Watson and the entire Baker Street scene is marvelous, but don't take my word for it because Mark Gatiss (Mycroft on <i>Sherlock</i>, writer for <i>Doctor Who</i>) will be on hand to introduce the film and discuss how Wilder's adaptation inspired and influenced his work on BBC <i>Sherlock</i>. If London was only a little closer I would risk life and limb to ensure that I had a seat for what sounds like a magical evening.<br />

<a href="http://www.sh-whoswho.com/index.php?refsociety=259"><b>The Epilogues of Sherlock Holmes</b></a> will hold their first gathering of 2014 on March 29 at 6:00 pm in Chatham, NJ at their usual spot, the <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/158+Southern+Blvd/@40.729112,-74.409942,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89c3a57c425937d3:0x4eecbbb143a14a53">Quaker (Friends) Meeting House</a>. For those unfamiliar with these beloved Sherlockian meetings hosted by the newly invested Peter McIntyre, BSI ("Arthur Cadogan West") and Bob Katz, BSI ("Dr. Ainstree"), the evening begins with a sumptuous feast (wild caught shrimp, lump crab cakes, salads, refreshments and home made ice cream for only $10 per person) and then eases into an unparalleled discussion, led by Katz, of two seemingly disparate stories from the Canon (this time it's "<a href="http://168.144.50.205/221bcollection/canon/thor.htm">The Problem of Thor Bridge</a>" and "<a href="http://168.144.50.205/221bcollection/canon/redc.htm">The Red Circle</a>"). Saving the best for last, Katz typically concludes the discussion by proposing a link - sometimes subtle, other times radical - between the two stories which inevitably sparks further debate and discussion up until the moment when the Quakers kick us out and we all must regrettably return to reality. Make sure to contact <a href="mailto:%20pslpete@optonline.net">Peter McIntyre</a> and RSVP by March 22 so an accurate head count can be determined. For those arriving by train, be sure to let Bob or Peter know so arrangements can be made to ferry you from the station to the meeting. If you've never had the Epilogues experience, I highly recommend making the trip as you'll be hard pressed to find a more intellectually and gastronomically satisfying Sherlockian event on the entire east coast. </div>

We do so because we have been following the Undershaw drama, and because the undersigned are largely all members of the Baker Street Irregulars.</div>

"We write in support of the Victorian Society's appeal to English Heritage to raise the listed status of Arthur Conan Doyle's house Undershaw in Hindhead, Surrey, to Grade I (Sherlock Holmes and the case of the property developers, July 8).<br />
"Representing the worldwide interest in Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes, we recognise that even though the recent application for listed building consent has been withdrawn, the house still desperately needs the protection that the higher grading will bring.<br />
"In 1895 Conan Doyle believed that his wife's tuberculosis meant a nomadic existence in foreign health resorts. But when he learned of the dry air and sheltered conditions of Hindhead, he built a remarkable home there.<br />
"Those years at Undershaw were among Conan Doyle's most productive. Sherlock Holmes, killed off in 1893, was restored to life, and many other stories and novels were written there, including Sir Nigel, which he considered his literary high point. He involved himself in public issues, and stood for parliament twice. He served as a volunteer army surgeon in South Africa during the Boer war, and wrote both a history of it and an internationally circulated pamphlet defending Britain's cause. He became deputy lieutenant of Surrey, and took an active role in the local golf club and in the Chiddingfold Hunt. He championed the cause of George Edalji, who was falsely imprisoned for animal mutilation (the subject of Julian Barnes's recent novel Arthur & George).<br />
"The many distinguished visitors to Undershaw included the writers James Barrie and Bram Stoker, the artist Sidney Paget, the cricketers Albert Trott and Frederic Meyrick-Jones, and even Field Marshal Lord Roberts, hero of Afghanistan and commander of British forces in the Boer war.<br />
"Conan Doyle's house is an obvious memorial to his achievements, and we believe it would be an indictment of British interest in its own heritage if the building's integrity were to be destroyed."<br />

In his annual letter to all Irregulars, the current "Wiggins" Mike Whelan noted that the Baker Street Irregulars have lost 16 of our own in the last 15 months. I know I've detailed many (but not all) of them here. And today I'm tasked with documenting another.<br />
<br />
Only this time, it's someone I knew fairly well.<br />
<br />
Paul Churchill ("Corot") passed beyond the Reichenbach over the weekend. He had announced earlier this year that he was suffering from incurable cancer; the end came much too quickly for anyone who knew Paul.<br />
<br />
Paul received his investiture in the BSI in 2006, but for anyone who knew him, it was a long time coming. He was involved in many Sherlockian societies from the mid-Atlantic states to New England, and his presence was always a jovial and warm one.<br />
<br />
Among Paul's many talents was illustration, document creation, and the compilation of "evidence boxes" - his term for artifacts he found, created, and assembled into collections that supported each of the 60 Canonical stories.<br />
<br />
In <a href="http://www.sh-whoswho.com/index.php?page=search&criteria=member&id=521">Paul's own words</a>:<br />

I have illustrated several Sherlockian books by authors such as Steve Clarkson, Steve Tollins, Joe Fink, Don Izban Susan Diamond, David Hammer, Patrick Campbell and Chris Redmond, and did covers for a reprint boxed set of August Derleth's Mill Creek Irregulars. With a colleague, I translated the story The Musgrave Ritual into Latin, the first and, so far, only Latin translation of an entire Sherlock Holmes story to be published.<br />
<br />
My main specialism is the amassing of Canonical evidence boxes. There is a box for each of the sixty tales. The boxes contain any letter, telegram, weapon, note, receipt, newspaper clipping, or piece of realia mentioned or hinted at in the Canon. My secondary specialism is the creation of genuine faux documents, many of which have seen their way into the packets given out at the annual BSI dinner in NY. Among these documents are Watson's commission, the charter of The Diogenes Club, the citation for Holmes' Legion of Honour Medal, the Bruce Partington plans and a patent for same, the hack licence for John Clayton, the Hotel Cosmopolitan receipt for the Countess of Morcar, the Stapletons' receipt for the Mexborough Hotel in Craven Street, one for the New Street, Birmingham hotel where Hall Pycroft stayed, Watson's chequebook which Holmes kept locked in his desk, the Capital and Counties Woolwich Branch chequebook belonging to Cadogan West and the very naval treaty copied by Percy Phelps.</blockquote>
He was a longtime friend of Steve Clarkson, another Irregular (author of the <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/itemsforsale/christmasannuals.html">2003 BSJ Christmas Annual</a>) who was taken from us too early by cancer. He spent many long hours with Steve, sharing memories and just being a friend. Paul was like that. He was a friend to many, and was never too busy or too involved to chat with or make time for fellow Sherlockians.<br />

This January at the BSI dinner, the task that has traditionally been solemnly and dutifully performed by Irv Kamil will twice as difficult one as the volume of Irregular deaths has nearly doubled. More than that, the prestige, magnitude and general likability of these Irregulars makes these passings that much more doleful.<br />

Giving a Toast at a Sherlockian Gathering of Note

As I reflected on Mike Whelan's comments at the Copper Beeches meeting regarding Sherlockian fellowship, it made me think back to a toast I was asked to give at the 2003 Dinner of the Baker Street Irregulars.<br />
<br />
In October 2002, I received a phone call by a fellow BSI asking me to give a toast at the BSI dinner - a tall order for a recently investitured Irregular.  I immediately and effusively answered, "Sure, I'd be honored to give a toast.  Who will I be toasting?"  The answer followed:<br />

"Sherlock Holmes."</blockquote>
Gulp.  The Big One.  The persona who represents why we're all gathering year after year.  What could I, a young thirty-something Irregular say that had not been said by much greater Sherlockians than myself?  By Christopher Morley, Edgar W. Smith, Isaac Asimov, Julian Wolff, Rex Stout, William Baring-Gould, etc.?<br />
<br />
I remembered that Christopher Morley's called the Canon  <a href="http://www.diogenes-club.com/shlibrary6.htm" style="color: #000066;"><span style="font-style: italic;">A Textbook of Friendship</span></a><span style="color: #000066;">,</span> which further reminded me that I have forged many friends while in the pursuit of this unique pasttime.  Then, reaching into my musical bag of tricks, I applied the music from the 1946 song <a href="http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2306" style="color: #000066;">"The House I Live In"</a> (made popular <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xejnzc_the-house-i-live-in-1945_shortfilms" target="_blank">by Frank Sinatra</a>) and applied it to the following lyrics.<br />

And so it is with many of us involved in the Game.  The scholarship, the mental sparring and such are all invigorating, but it's the relationships with each other that make this hobby one of the most enjoyable of any I can imagine.<br />
