When it converges with the world of Sherlock Holmes, it becomes all the more interesting.</p><p>Joshua Harvey lives at that convergence and has some wonderful stories to tell about his history with music, with Sherlock Holmes, and with Patrick Gowers, the composer of the score of the Granada/ITV Sherlock Holmes series.</p><p>In addition to his work with Gowers' material, Josh threw himself into a Canonical composing fit during the pandemic, writing theme songs for a variety of Sherlockian societies (aka "scions") that met both online and in person. We have samples of his work that may give other societies ideas about future commissions.</p><p>There's a BIG surprise with regard to the <b>Canonical Couplet</b> quiz — one that you won't want to miss. Since that time, the detective has been portrayed hundreds of times on the screen.</div><div><br /></div><div>And in recent years, there have been several female incarnations of Sherlock Holmes and/or Dr. Watson. Let's track how we got here and take a deeper look at one particular series.</div> <div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">They Might Be Giants</h3>It began as far back as 1971 in <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067848/" target="_blank">They Might Be Giants</a></i>, when George C. Scott played Justin Playfair, a judge who retreats into fantasy and thinks he is Sherlock Holmes after his wife's death. When attempts are made to institutionalize him, he catches the attention of Dr. Mildred Watson, a psychiatrist. <div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rSD5yKu27es" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div><br /> <br /><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">Elementary</h3></div><div>In September of 2012, CBS aired <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2191671/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1" target="_blank">Elementary</a></i>, a modern interpretation with a female Dr. Joan Watson played by Lucy Liu. It is set in New York City. Dr. Watson had been a surgeon but was never in the military. In this, Holmes is portrayed by Jonny Lee Miller as a petulant and obnoxious post-rehab drug addict. Aiden Quinn is dependable as Captain Thomas Gregson.  <br /> <br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ff-XiZzJLxw" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><br />James O'Leary, BSI ("James, Son of the Grimpen Postmaster") spoke was interviewed about <i>Elementary</i> on <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose150" target="_blank">Episode 150 of IHOSE</a>.<br /><br /></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">221B</h3><div> In July 2013, the <a href="https://youtu.be/tcby_Fc1yko" target="_blank"><i>221B</i></a> web series premiered. It is a period setting with a female Sherlock Holmes. This was an interesting take with a female Holmes and a male Watson sharing digs at 221B. While not a big-budget production,  the series was interesting, intelligent and done with care.<div>   <br /><center><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tcby_Fc1yko" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></center> <br /><br /> <br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">Herlock</h3> Around 2015, the <i><a href="http://herlock.us/" target="_blank">Herlock</a> </i>web series went  for broke with a modern interpretation using females for both lead characters. In this incarnation, Watson is a veterinary student.</div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KKm2maRCpLc" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div><br /> <br /><i> Herlock </i>was written by Lee Eric Shackleford, BSI ("Woodman's Lee"), a guest on <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose152" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 152 of IHOSE</a>.<br /> <br /> <br /> <h3 style="text-align: left;">Miss Sherlock</h3> Then, in 2019, I came across another incarnation of the Master and the Boswell that was part of an HBO subscription.  This program, <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7755494/" target="_blank">Miss Sherlock</a></i>, was created in 2018 and with it came with a female Sherlock and a female Dr. Wato-san, set in modern-day Tokyo. <br /><br /><center><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V0FIUz5OpT4" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></center> <br /> <br /> <br /> Unless you speak Japanese, you might need a bigger screen to read the subtitles. The subtitles will not concern you because your eyes will already be riveted to the screen. Smart scripts and clean direction keep the action moving.  <br /> <br /> <br /> You will recognize the stories, but just as you recognize one and think about the original tale, it will unfold in unexpected ways. The writing is very good, the visual impact of every scene is so well done.  <br /> <br /> <br /> Sherlock and Wato-san rent an apartment from Kimi Hatano, in a house that looks like a Victorian throwback in the midst of a Tokyo neighborhood. Their digs are cluttered with what you would expect from Sherlock. All of the places and homes they visit are the expected minimalist, which provides a stark contrast. There are chemical experiments there too, but one of the results is a cucumber-based beauty cream.  <br /> <br /> <br /> Sara "Sherlock" Shelly Futaba is every bit the genius detective, playing the most intense version of the Master. She is a fashionista, solving each crime in catwalk-ready but practical outfits and chasing down leads in stiletto heels. She is ruthless and unfeeling in her pursuit of the truth. Her instrument is the cello, which she plays flawlessly. The dressing gown has been replaced by delightful pajamas. She is superbly played by Yūko Takeuchi. <br /><br /> Dr. Wato ("Wato-san") has been a surgeon in Syria with PTSD who is now trying to find herself and romance. Sherlock is completely offended by her sense of fashion. She is definitely the long-suffering type, well portrayed by Shihori Kanjiya. <br /><br /> This version of the landlady is Kimi Hatano who is played by Ran Ito. Wato-san cooks traditional meals in her kitchen. She adds a lot to the ladies' lives, and is involved more than Mrs. Hudson was in the Canon. <br /><br /> Season 1 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i> contains 8 episodes. During the season we see their relationship evolve as their partnership grows. However, both are still insisting they are not friends.</div><div>  <br />The style of these episodes, and the stories, compare favorably to BBC's <i>Sherlock</i>. Although it is hard to do a side-by-side comparison,  I found <i>Miss Sherlock</i> to be more riveting, with better stories, and less impressed with itself.  <br /> <br /> <br /> Familiar characters abound, with their own modern and Japanese take. Among them, you will meet irresistible versions of Mycroft and Lestrade. It's like the familiar faces Dorothy saw when she woke up after the tornado in the scene from "The Wizard of Oz". They all seem so well cast, and make you happy to recognize them. As with the plots, there will be twists in the lineup.</div><div>  <br />When you can, give this smart, great, modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes and his <br /> world a try. Unless you speak Japanese, be sure to watch when you can focus on the screen. <br /><br /> The English subtitles of this Japanese program remind of a story from the attempts at language translation during the Cold War, which may be apocryphal. Scientists had a computer translate "the spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak” to Russian, then translated the result from Russian back to English to the phrase “the vodka was good, but the meat was rotten.” </div><div><br /></div><div>In the case of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>, the results are astonishingly good. "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" translates to Japanese and back as "Eliminate the impossible…and you are left with the unlikely truth".  <br /><br /></div><div> As of this writing, HBO has not responded to my question about Season 2 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>. Even if there were one planned, it would have to be recast, due to the untimely death of Yûko Takeuchi, who played Sherlock, in September 2020.<br /><br /></div><div><i>Miss Sherlock</i> is available on HBO Max, HBO Asia, and Hulu Japan. Sherlock Hound Is Coming to Blu-Ray

He began his career in entertainment first as an actor, then as a stage manager, advertising agent, and for an artistic agency before joining the ranks of Granada Television in 1960. He literally worked his way up, beginning as a bus driver and handyman before being given responsibility for local programs and archival material.</p><p>He was tapped as an assistant director for <i>Coronation Street</i> in 1965 before joining other shows in the following years, such as <i>Mr. Rose</i> and <i>Pardon the Expression</i>. His fledgling experience as a producer began in 1968 with a couple of episodes of Coronation Street, followed by a proper producing career in 1972 with <i>A Family at Wa</i>r and <i>Holly</i>. </p><p>The Sherlock Holmes connection began in 1981, when Cox realized that Granada, which already had a commitment to dramatizations of classics from the likes of H.G. Wells, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and Evelyn Waugh, should turn its attention to Sherlock Holmes.</p><p>According to the definitive biography of Cox by <a href="https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php?title=Michael_Cox" target="_blank">The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia</a>,</p><blockquote><p>"Cox is really the father of the Sherlock Holmes series. Without him, it would not have existed. Indeed, it was he who, a fine connoisseur and fervent admirer of Arthur Conan Doyle, realized that Sherlock Holmes' stories had finally fallen into the public domain and that the great detective had hardly been seen on television screens for ten years. He was the one who convinced Granada's management that it was possible to achieve a great success by producing a colour version of Sherlock Holmes' adventures for a new generation of spectators."</p></blockquote><p>While the accountants were looking to cut expenses in any way, Cox realized the value for the Granada brand that classics afforded them. While they were never huge ratings successes, these lavishly produced dramas brought the studio respect in the domestic market and exposure on public television in the United States.</p><p>David Plowright, managing director (and Michael's boss) at Granada Television, gave Cox two conditions on which he would green-light the production: there had to be a financial commitment from an American partner before production began, and they needed someone of star quality — "Someone like Jeremy Brett," he said.</p><p>As they listed their criteria, the casting directors determined that they were unable to find "someone like Jeremy Brett" to fill the role—they could only find Jeremy Brett himself! So that was settled. As to the U.S. partner turned another lovely coincidence is that PBS's popular <i>MYSTERY!</i> series was produced by Joan Wilson, who just happened to be Jeremy Brett's wife.</p><p>In bringing the series to life, David Plowright provided another bit of inspiring leadership: he suggested that a full-scale replica of Baker Street be constructed as an exterior set. This iconic thoroughfare lent a great deal of realism and credibility to the Granada series over time, and is as essential and iconic as Brett himself in the title role.</p><p>The other piece of preparation that Michael Cox introduced to the production, along with associate producer Stuart Doughty and researcher Nick Cooney, was <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Baker-Street-File-Appearance-Television/dp/1553100387/ref=sr_1_1?crid=31CR84R4A1QCK&dchild=1&keywords=the+baker+street+file+michael+cox&qid=1613057657&sprefix=The+Baker+Street+File%2Caps%2C192&sr=8-1" target="_blank">The Baker Street File</a></i>. Now a collector's item, it was described as "A guide to the appearance and habits of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson specially prepared for the Granada Television series <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>." There were 100 copies published in 1983 for the cast and crew of the series — photocopied typed sheets between manilla card stock. Then in 1997, Calabash Press published a paperback version. Music—such an important part of Sherlock Holmes's personality—had to be commissioned, and <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/01/remembering-composer-patrick-gowers.html" target="_blank">Patrick Gowers</a> composed the main theme and incidental music, including period- and geography-specific pieces that were variations of the original.</p><p>The series finally debuted on ITV in England in April 1984. </p><p>Cox remained attached to the production for its entirety, through <i>The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes</i> in 1991. By that time, Cox was engaged as an independent producer (Granada had cut costs and eliminated a number of executive positions; by 1992, Plowright was outsted as CEO) and Jeremy Brett's health was in a precipitous decline. The age of Sherlock Holmes was over at Granada Television Cox went on to produce one more television movie in 1991: <i>Thatcher: The Final Days</i>.</p><p>Since that time, Michael Cox enjoyed retirement and participated in Sherlockian activities from time to time: he traveled to the United States to join the From Gillette to Brett conferences and attended gatherings of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, which made him an Honorary Member last year (a well-deserved accolade).</p><p>His contributions to the world of Sherlock Holmes will forever be with us.</p>

It's hard to believe that one of the most influential impersonators of Sherlock Holmes has been gone 25 years.<br /><br />Many have hailed Brett as the definitive Sherlock Holmes, although it can be argued that each generation has its own definitive Holmes. In our estimation, the value of Brett's performance in <a href="https://amzn.to/2F1YAmY" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the Granada series</a> are due in part to two things: 1) the careful crafting of the Victorian setting and (in the earlier episodes mostly) the faithful adaptation of the Canon; and 2) Brett's own interest and expertise in the Canon and Sherlock Holmes.<br /><br />In <a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/studyincelluloid.html" target="_blank"><i>A Study in Celluloid</i></a> (Wessex Press), Michael Cox, the producer of the Granada series, noted that often times in script readings, Jeremy would make suggestions to steer the writing toward the Canon, with entire paragraphs of dialog being lifted directly from the original writings. Indeed, the team even had their own reference guide that kept the production crew and cast well informed as to Holmes's appearance and habits called <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2Z5MTmf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Baker Street File</a></i>.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>We personally remember the outpouring of grief and memories that Sherlock Holmes fans shared online in 1995 — the early days of the Internet — through discussion forums and listservs, and wonder just how the web would have exploded had his death occurred in the present day. But as we thought about it more, we were convinced.</p><p>Let's not forget that one of the most famous portrayers of Sherlock Holmes was William Gillette. With a full head of hair and a square jawline, he wouldn't have seemed to fit Paget's version. Maybe it was his appearance as D’Artagnan in <i>The Three Musketeers</i> that first grabbed my attention. He was a most attractive and romantic leading man in <i>The Rivals</i> or as Lord Byron and he became the actor that I looked forward to seeing on the cast list. Later, his appearance as Berowne in <i>Love’s Labour’s Lost</i> and Max de Winter in <i>Rebecca</i> would be greatly anticipated. </div><div><br />When I looked for information about his early career there was no reliable biography or full career book.  The best accounts were provided by Jeremy’s interviews with journalists who wanted to celebrate his success as Sherlock Holmes.  And Jeremy was always ready to share his experience and the thrills of being an actor.  As a teacher of English in Secondary School I used the film version of <i>The Merchant of Venice</i> with the students and we all agreed his interpretation of Bassanio was outstanding. The Granada Studios <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> was also used alongside the Conan Doyle stories to teach the skills of detective writing.  </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h4 style="text-align: left;"><i>The book includes hundreds of photos in colour and black and white. Tell us from where these were assembled.</i></h4><div>The photographs were provided by Linda Pritchard, Jeremy’s partner who cared for him in the last few years of his life.  A large section of these had been part of Jeremy’s personal collection and the Granada Studios collection has been agreed by the Archivist at Granada and Charles Allen the Chairman.</div><div><br /></div><div> </div><h4 style="text-align: left;"><i>What’s different about this book than other Jeremy Brett books that have preceded it?</i></h4><div>This is the first complete career book for Jeremy and I have used Jeremy’s own words, or those of the people he had worked with to provide the information wherever they were available. Friends have also given their opinions and the critics of the performances provide another indication of the success of the productions. The only other biography/career book that has been published, now out of print, contained too much speculation creating confusion between fact and fiction. Everything within my book has been verified and supported from original sources. It also includes radio, television, special appearances and audio recordings.</div><div><br /></div><div> </div><h4 style="text-align: left;"><i>When you think about Jeremy Brett’s career spanning the stage and large and small screens as it did, what stands out, other than Sherlock Holmes?</i></h4><div>Jeremy will always be remembered for playing Freddie Eynsford Hill in the acclaimed musical <i>My Fair Lady</i> and the accounts of his time in Hollywood are full of personal reminiscences of tea with Mary Pickford and lunch with Dorothy Parker and the run-ins with Rex Harrison about where he should sing his one song “On the Street Where you Live”.  </div><div><br /></div><div>His appearance as Lord Arthur Goring in the Oscar Wilde play <i>An Ideal Husband</i> is a delight as he is totally convincing as the sophisticated romantic hero who could deliver his <i>bon mots</i> with elegance and style but still defeat the schemes of an unscrupulous woman here played by Margaret Leighton. His Dracula on the Broadway stage would be something which Jeremy could throw himself into with his usual verve and enthusiasm and which he enjoyed enormously. His performance was greeted by an audience who were “wildly enthusiastic” and the universal acclaim from the critics also lifted his heart. </div><div><br /></div><div>The television production of <i>The Picture of Katherine Mansfield</i> was a revelation as John Middleton Murry was an intellectual, one of the founding critics of literary criticism, who was married to the famous novelist but after her early death from tuberculosis was remembered as one of the most hated men of literature.  This was another performance in which Jeremy became another human being totally different to himself and alongside Vanessa Redgrave they were described as “magical to watch.”  </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>First and foremost, Jeremy was a classically trained actor who received acclaim for his classical roles.  His Hamlet at the age of 26 years was a personal success as it earned him significant praise from a sophisticated West End audience. But it is perhaps his time at the National Theatre which gave him the greatest joy as he relished the opportunity to speak the words that Shakespeare provided. Jeremy said he loved the rhyme and rhythm of the poetry and although his dyslexia made it difficult, he approached it with dogged determination until he was word perfect and could “bounce on it.”  </div><div><br /></div><div>His time at the National Theatre under Laurence Olivier provided the best possible training and would hone his estimable talents. <i>As You Like It</i> was celebrated as the first all-male production and was greeted with much excitement from the media. In one article the critic had chosen Jeremy for his choice of clothes. Even the <i>Vogue</i> and <i>Queen</i> magazines labelled him as "Man of Fashion" and featured his trend setting style.  </div><div><br /></div><div>But it was perhaps his performance of Che Guevara in Macrune’s <i>Guevara</i> which most impressed the critics. He looked nothing like the pictures of the South American revolutionary, the man with high ideals for mankind, but by his technique of “becoming” he was able to convince the audience and the critics who praised him for a performance of enormous “power and sensitivity”. He said: </div><blockquote><div>“I was intrigued by Guevara’s exploits over there, so I decided to go and follow his route. Actually, this was a rather sad thing to do because, of course, everything ended for him in Bolivia.” </div></blockquote><div>Jeremy spent six months backpacking around S. America.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>His appearance in <i>Rebecca </i>is perhaps the favourite of so many of us as he has caught the tragedy of the haunted man Maxim de Winter in a four-part production which the author thought was the closest interpretation of her famous novel. Jeremy’s performance was inevitably compared with that of his mentor, Laurence Olivier in the film of 1940 and it does not suffer from the comparison, indeed many find his interpretation preferable as an authentic Maxim who was capable of murder. </div><div><br /></div><div>Edward Ashburnham in <i>The Gentle Soldier</i> is remarkable and it is this that persuaded Michael Cox to choose Jeremy to be the next Sherlock Holmes.</div><div><br /></div><div> </div><h4 style="text-align: left;"><i>For which portrayals do you think Brett doesn’t get the credit which he deserves?</i></h4><div>His time in Canada at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival was a strange experience for both Maggie Smith and Jeremy. They had been used to receiving universal acclaim for their work and for some reason the critics were far too critical. They didn’t appreciate the incomers bringing their new approach to the Shakespearean canon. The adverse comments attracted the attention of <i>The Stage </i>magazine who tried to find the reasons why the reviews were so different to the critics of <i>The Financial Times</i>, <i>The New York Times</i> or <i>The London Evening Standard</i> who had welcomed the same productions with a very different tone. <i>The Stage</i> called it “The Clash of the Critics” and the excuse seemed to be the Atlantic Ocean which separated the two nations. </div><div><br /></div><div>Jeremy’s production of <i>The Tempest</i> was greeted with much the same response as the critics were unable to accept the revengeful image of an angry Prospero. But they seemed to miss the message of the play as a journey to forgiveness which Shakespeare had presented successfully for the first time in the three hour performance on stage.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h4 style="text-align: left;"><i>We see David Burke wrote the Foreword. How did you manage to make that happen?</i></h4><div>When we were gathering together Jeremy’s friends and colleagues for the twentieth anniversary of his death for the installation of his memorial bench on Clapham Common in 2015 I wrote to David and to Michael Cox to ask if they might join us for the occasion. Michael was too unwell to be with us but David was most gracious and telephoned to say he would join us. We have spoken on several occasions and he has willingly offered his assistance.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h4 style="text-align: left;"><i>Tell us about any one surprise or obscure fact in the book that you’re particularly fond of.</i></h4><div>The production of the play <i>Traveller Without Luggage</i> on stage in 1972 and it is perhaps the most difficult one to read about as the story is so terrible. Jeremy was a very sensitive man and he must have been moved by the experience. The script recounts the story of the soldier, an amnesiac found wandering on the deserted railway station in Lyon who has returned from the Great War in 1918. Without relatives, he was locked up in an asylum. However, dozens of families came forward to claim him as their lost son or brother and Gaston tells of being hugged by hundreds of strange men and women who tearfully claimed him as their son. The real story was much more tragic as the soldier was identified by his grieving family but was never released from the asylum as litigation amongst the other families kept him there. He died during the Second World War probably from hunger and became known as “the living unknown soldier”.</div><div><br /></div><div>One personal detail I had known little about was the stunning soprano voice of his youth which was trained at Eton where he was given the major solos to sing in the College Chapel. He even performed in many of the nation’s cathedrals.
