It was a momentous occasion, as Kean is only the sixth head of the BSI since its founding in 1934.</p><p>Burt and Scott had an opportunity to speak with Michael on a wide range of topics, including his Sherlockian origins (which were induced rather than pursued), his career in the publishing industry, early days in Sherlockian scions, and his role with the BSI Press.</p><p>Michael also takes us behind the scenes to give us the story of his selection as the next BSI, going back a number of years. We discuss his vision for the role of a literary society in the twenty-first century and more pointedly, the difficult decision to make the 2021 BSI Weekend a virtual affair.</p><p>Also covered is our upcoming 200th episode: we are looking for your feedback. The man flew to New York City and then took the train to Washington. On the outskirts of the city, the man was kidnapped and had not been seen for several days. Holmes learns from the Home Office that the man was in fact a government agent who was delivering a highly secret, two-page document to the U.S. government. In verifying the contents at his flat, Holmes concludes the document had been reduced to microfilm. But I now have reason to think that I've been inflating my credentials all these years.<br /> <br /> The story starts in 1981, when I was was already a long-time Sherlockian but not a particularly well-known one. I'd been part of the youth movement in the 1960s, a <a href="http://www.bakerstreetirregulars.com/">Baker Street Irregular</a> since 1966, a <a href="http://torontobootmakers.com/">Bootmaker of Toronto</a> since the society was founded in 1972, and since 1979 the co-editor of the Bootmakers' magazine <i>Canadian Holmes</i>. But I didn't do much Sherlockian travelling, and of course I didn't have the continent-wide network of Sherlockian friends that the internet has now made possible.<br /> <br /> So it was kind of a big deal when I was planning a business trip to Chicago (those were the days, when my employer could afford to send me places), got in touch with somebody or other about maybe having lunch with a couple of local Sherlockians while I was there, and was pleased and intimidated to find that my visit coincided with the annual dinner of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/">The Hounds of the Baskerville [sic]</a>. Would I like to attend the event as a guest? Duh; yes I would.<br /> <br /> And I did, on October 5, 1981, at a place on North Wells Street called <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">That Steak Joynt</a> (which itself has a rather <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">mysterious history</a>). Under the leadership of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Mangler"><b>Bob Mangler</b></a>, Master of the Hounds for some forty years, the program included such things as the Hounds customarily do, and a showing of the half-hour "Silver Blaze" starring Canadian actor <b>Christopher Plummer</b>. I remember very little about the evening, to tell the truth, apart from a conversation with a young woman at my table who wanted to tell me about the limitations on women's involvement in Sherlockian matters in Chicago, a topic that I understand has not yet been exhausted 36 years later. (The Hounds didn't admit women members until a couple of decades after my visit, but women guests were welcome at its one meeting of the year. [<i>More on this in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose130">Episode 130</a> of <b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</b> - ed.</i>]) <br /> <br /> Much of what I know about the traditions of the Hounds, and indeed about the details of that 1981 dinner, is based on an admirable volume that has just been published, a "<b>75th Anniversary Edition</b>" history of the society, written half by <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Nieminski">John Nieminski</a></b> (taking the story up to 1983) and half by the present Master, <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Terras">Donald Terras</a></b>. Launched at the 2017 dinner a few weeks ago, a gala <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/10/episode-130-hounds-of-baskerville-sic.html">celebration of the society's dodranscentenary</a>, it tells the story in some detail from the society's 1943 founding by the great <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/">Vincent Starrett</a> up to the present day. I came home from Chicago with a pewter Hounds pin (which I still wear occasionally at Sherlockian events) and the distinct impression that the Master of the Hounds had awarded me an "honorary membership" in the society. I reported briefly on my Houndship at the next meeting of the Bootmakers of Toronto, and was rewarded by a call from long-time Bootmaker (and Baker Street Irregular) David Skene-Melvin: "Now you are officially a son of a bitch!" <br /> <br /> But the aforesaid page 59 lists four people who were inducted into Hounds membership at the 1981 dinner, and none of them is me. The historian also refers to "certificates", and if my loot from that evening included a certificate of any kind, I certainly don't know where it is. From which I conclude that my "honorary" status didn't really make me a Hound, and that's a <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/">trifle</a> embarrassing, since I have been claiming ever since that I was one.<br /> <br /> But who knows? Maybe some year soon, I'll get back to Chicago on the auspicious October night, and betake myself to the annual dinner of the Hounds, and we'll see if they let me in.<br /> <br /> --<br /> <br /> <br /></div>

I've been to two of the Question's weekend colloquia and once a social gathering, but this is the first time I've ever attended a regular meeting of what turns out to be the nearest Sherlockian group to Carleton Place. <br /> <br /> Unsurprisingly, it was a terrific evening, with Sherlockian erudition, jokes, digressions, a daunting quiz, old-timers, newcomers, and appropriate beverages: sherry or port at $1 a glass for use in toasting.<br /> <br /> Among the old-timers (in a group of two dozen people altogether) was former society president Patrick Campbell, who proudly announced that he is coming up to his 94th birthday. Among the newcomers: a young woman who confided that she has quietly enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes stories for years, but got more serious about them after watching the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i>, and found out about the society through the library branch where its meetings are held.<br /> <br /> The venue is the dignified Westmount Public Library, a jewel of one of Montréal's wealthier (and English-speaking) suburbs. The room where we met has windows that are elegantly engraved with the names of classic children's authors – no doubt it was the children's department at one time. Regrettably Arthur Conan Doyle (writing for "the man who is yet half a boy") was not one of those commemorated.<br /> <br /> The story of the evening was "The Lion's Mane", which was cheerfully agreed to be not one of the best, particularly with that feeble and erroneous deduction about the dry towel. It does have its points of interest, though, particularly the news that Sherlock Holmes was by habit and inclination a swimmer. We wondered where he practiced his sport, other than of course the Reichenbach Falls. <br /> <br /> A very civilized and cordial evening, in short – which is just what one would expect from Sherlockians pretty much anywhere. The Other London: A Great Place for a Sherlockian Society

(Liverpool, Liverpudlian; cesspool, cesspudlian; it's obvious after a round of drinks.)<br /> <br /> It all got started in 2015 when I realized that there were a few members of the <a href="http://www.torontobootmakers.com/" target="_blank">Bootmakers of Toronto</a> who lived in or near London, which is far enough away from the big city (120 miles) that they wouldn't often get to meetings. I sent out a note suggesting that we meet for lunch and see what happened, and one Saturday in August we assembled at the <a href="http://www.thewaltzingweasel.com/" target="_blank">Waltzing Weasel</a> pub on London's Adelaide Street. The most recent one, in January, drew an amazing eight participants, and if everybody on the email list showed up at once, the Church Key would have to find seats for as many as a dozen of us. Besides London, members drive in from Woodstock, Stratford, Guelph, and in my case Waterloo. We have managed without any sort of formal organization, other than Mark Hanson's obliging service in keeping a list of email addresses and sending out a note now and then to remind us of the next get-together.<br /> <br /> <h3> "the conversation drifted away into other channels" [STUD]</h3> Conversation at the lunch table sometimes touches on Sherlock Holmes, but we're not compulsive about it; there's also lots of talk about movies, travel, the challenges of teaching and the problem of crowded bookshelves. Some of us are Bootmakers; two of us are Baker Street Irregulars; no fewer than six of us wrote essays for the <i><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/10/about-sixty-eliminates-improbable.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">About Sixty</a></i> anthology, and we occasionally talk about that too. <br /> <br /> Oh, and we talk about London, which is a pleasant, prosperous, rather conservative city of 350,000, the home of Western University and several insurance companies. It's the county seat of Middlesex County, it sits on the Thames River, and its points of interest include Covent Garden Market and Oxford, Pall Mall, and Piccadilly Streets. It's better known for snow, however, than for yellow fog.<br /> <br /> <h3> "my knowledge of the history of crime" [STUD]</h3> It also turns out that the Church Key is just steps away from the sites of two of Canada's most legendary crimes. One is the 1919 disappearance of impresario <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrose_Small" target="_blank">Ambrose Small</a>, who owned the Grand Theatre straight across Richmond Street from the pub. The other is the murder of waitress Kate Gardener, whose body was found in May 1879 (not August as Wikipedia claims) in a shed behind a house on Queens Avenue, just around the corner. The house was the home and place of business of <a href="http://murderpedia.org/male.C/c/cream-thomas-neill.htm" target="_blank">Dr. Neill Cream</a>, who would eventually be hanged for other murders in the other London far away. After the inquest learned that Gardener's death was not suicide, as first suspected, but murder, Cream found it convenient to abandon his practice as sawbones and abortionist, and to leave town on the Great Western Railway. Neither he nor anyone else was ever charged in the case. The Cesspudlians will get around to doing more intensive research on the matter, one of these days.<br /> <br /> <br /> I'm going to miss all this friendship and erudition when I make the move to Carleton Place, near Ottawa. Waterloo is a substantial distance from London — an hour if you drive with determination, two hours if you amble the way I like to — but from my new home it would be an overnight trip. I suspect the Cesspudlians will get along fine without me, but I'm certainly not going to forget them. I think the Cesspudlian Society is, in fact, the best Sherlockian group I've ever belonged to.
