Jabez Wilson got lured away from his pawn shop whilst his handy half-pay assistant tunneled his way to the bank across the street, in search of gold ("The Red-Headed League").</p><p>The ruse was repeated in "The Three Garridebs," when Nathan Garrideb was sent on a wild goose chase in search of a third member of his family's name, in order to claim a massive estate.</p><p>Conan Doyle himself was no stranger to hoaxes, having fallen for the whimsical photographs of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottingley_Fairies" target="_blank">Cottingley Faeries</a>, and being implicated in the <a href="https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php/Piltdown_Man_Hoax" target="_blank">Piltdown Man hoax</a> (although never proven to be involved). It was 2007, and rumors were rife with what the next Sherlock Holmes project would be. Mixing Sherlockian canon, scholarship, and pastiche, this book provides an exceptional, enjoyable read for Sherlockians of all persuasions.</p><p> </p><p><strong><i>A Three-Pipe Christmas</i></strong> begins with "<a href="https://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/32/the-adventures-of-sherlock-holmes/351/adventure-7-the-adventure-of-the-blue-carbuncle/">The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle</a>", which leads into a trilogy of essays that provide Sherlockian insights into the context of the story. Julie McKuras, BSI ("The Duchess of Devonshire") in her essay "The Season of Forgiveness" and Monica M. Schmidt, BSI ("Julia Stoner") in her "A Most Difficult Time of the Year" highlight how the story reflects much of the joy <i>and </i>the melancholy of the holiday. As a first-time reader of this particular pastiche, I found it quite enjoyable for its sly sense of humor as well as its prose styling. (Or as one commenter states, the story's tone is "more Lewis Carroll than Conan Doyle," and that is to its credit). With its focus on book collecting and literature, "The Unique Hamlet" has more than earned its reputation as a high-end pastiche.</p><p>The essays that follow provide insight into the history of "The Unique Hamlet" describe its importance in written Sherlockian pastiche. The late Susan Rice, BSI ("Beeswing") describes it in her essay as the "gold standard" in its balance of humor and style. Dan Andricaco (who edited <b><i>The Three Pipe Christmas</i></b>) also discusses how Vincent Starrett deftly balances pastiche, parody, and satire in writing "The Unique Hamlet." As soon as you don a pair of red running shoes or a bright yellow slicker, there's a higher degree of certainty that you'll be caught.</p><p>That being the case, would you consider wearing a deerstalker cap while you're exposing yourself?</p><p>Because <a href="https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/serial-flasher-who-wears-sherlock-22624365?fbclid=IwAR2DbQsRMBs9QgOXKKnLSpS582Tr8aZa-quw-kRMZkdaR9hfk5M1GtbESiY" target="_blank">there's a serial flasher on the loose</a> in Tunbridge Wells, Kent who is wearing "a Sherlock Holmes hat," according to officials, as reported in <i>The Daily Star</i>.</p><p>If Tunbridge Wells sounds familiar to you, it's the location of <b><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/09/groombridge-place-sherlock-holmes.html#.X1FSRnlKjb0" target="_blank">Groombridge Place</a></b>, an inspiration for Birlstone Manor in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>.</p><p>For three times in the span of two days, the would-be detective determined he needed a little more exposure. "I am lost without my Boswell," as Holmes said in "A Scandal in Bohemia."</p><p>The man is described as in his 40s or 50s and with a gray beard. Hey wait a moment — <a href="ihose.co/ihose199" target="_blank">our most recent podcast guest</a> fits that description. And he regularly wears a deerstalker...</p><p>Tunbridge Wells local Simon Vickers, 51, said: "This guy is asking to be caught really—anyone wearing a deerstalker is pretty easy to spot, so hopefully he'll be tracked down before much longer."</p><p><br /></p><p>Thinking this is a purely modern affliction, we turned to the Canon for reassurance. During that time, there was a bulletin board at alt.fan.holmes and the Hounds of the Internet, but not much else.<br /> <br /> Then in 1994, along came <a href="http://sherlockian.net/" target="_blank">Sherlockian.net</a>, which set out to capture all of the links about Sherlock Holmes on the Internet. It still stands as one of—if not the—best sites of Sherlock Holmes reference material online.<br /> <br /> It became one of the sites we visited on a regular basis, and has constantly been an inspiration for some of the content we share here on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere. While our our <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/p/resources.html#.V4-s5rgrLb0" target="_blank">Resources</a> section is nowhere near as complete, we tried to to our best to help keep up with some of the main links that we thought would be helpful.<br /> <br /> But as Sherlockian.net proprietor and IHOSE contributor Chris Redmond told us in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose99" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 99</a>, trying to document everything on the web quickly became a very difficult task.<br /> <br /> <iframe frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/271526279&color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%"></iframe><br /> <br /> As the online world of Sherlock Holmes has grown exponentially — particularly over the last four or five years of social media's rise to prominence — that task has only gotten more cumbersome.<br /> <br /> So it was with great surprise and alarm that we saw Chris's announcement today that Sherlockian.net would be shutting down on December 31, 2016. This grand and legendary resource that has been online for 22 years might not be with us much longer.<br /> <br /> We're hoping that we can get a stay of execution. We've already heard from some like-minded Sherlockians who want to see the site continue, or see its contents protected and given new life on other sites. The immense work that has gone into creating the hundreds of pages there (and believe us, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/reaching-milestone.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">we understand</a> what it's like to create that much content) is at times a thankless job.<br /> <br /> We have to believe that such a decision by Chris does not come lightly, and we don't want to see his life's work vanish in an instant. We have some ideas about how to keep the lights on or to continue to make the content available to interested Sherlockians around the world. Perhaps you have some ideas too. Feel free to leave a comment below or email us.<br /> <br /> A valid first step is to create a sitemap of Sherlockian.net and catalog all of the content. If there's anyone who can help take a stab at that, we'd appreciate it.<br /> <br /> The creative process is a daunting and lonely task at times. But was it true?<br /> <br /> We were recently reminded of a number of classic myths about Sherlock Holmes, thanks to <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/armbands.html">a contest being sponsored by <b><i>The Baker Street Journal</i></b></a> (also a sponsor of our program): it has long been rumored that men wore black armbands throughout the city of London after reading "The Final Problem" in the <i>Strand Magazine</i>. Summed up, this is basically an issue that is being brought to court via a case titled <b><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/125645482/KLINGER-vs-CONAN-DOYLE-ESTATE-LTD">Klinger vs. Conan Doyle Estate</a></b>, in which Leslie Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange") is contesting the Conan Doyle Estate's claim that any new content that contains Sherlock Holmes must pay a royalty or license fee to the Estate. Burt and Scott parse through some of the non-technical/legal aspects of the case and discuss what's at stake.<br /> <br /> Speaking of being at stake, the other item on the docket is the debate as to what in fact constitutes a Sherlockian of good standing? That is, can one have arrived at the doorstep of 221B Baker Street via the BBC series (or Granada, or Universal, etc.) or must one have been schooled only in the printed literature and dress the part of a 1940s joiner? It's quite a debate - one that was taken up vehemently by The Baker Street Babes earlier this year, after the "Elite Devotee Redux" was published in recently resurrected  <i>Saturday Review of Literature</i>.
