Addy is still answering letters sent to Sherlock Holmes, which brings them this second case. Like the one in the first book, it has a media connection to the great detective. </p><p>As many know, there's a key scene in the 1970 Billy Wilder movie <i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i> involving a fake Loch Ness Monster. (If you don't know, don't worry — one character tells another the key facts early on.) In this novel, two video podcasters have journeyed to the lake to document their attempt to raise the head of the prop, but they've disappeared. </p><p><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/04/long-lost-prop-from-private-life-of.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Related: Long Lost Prop from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes Found</a></p><p>The supporting cast involved in this mystery includes an incompetent local police officer, an incredibly eccentric local lord who's hunting the monster himself, his daughter who runs the estate's conference center, the waiter at the hotel restaurant who hates his customers and isn't afraid to show it, and three authors: a Texan who writes action thrillers starring Ted Testosterone, a TV show parodist, and someone who writes creepy erotic noir. </p><p>Author Chris Chan tells a brisk story, perhaps a little over-seasoned with random bits of trivia, but I enjoyed learning about weird Scottish dishes, for example, and I don't mind dense writing. As with many other modern authors, it's unfortunate that his characters all sound much the same, with the same vocabularies and voices on the page; it's the plotting that's his strength. Also that I can never resist a dramatic situation. I took the liberty—the very great liberty, I admit—of putting the stone into your pocket at the beginning of our interview.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">He used a similar ruse (but didn't admit it) with the Right Honourable Trelawney Hope in "The Second Stain," when he slipped the missing document back into the despatch box.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So when clients, the police, or perpetrators claimed actions were practical jokes — such as in "The Dancing Men," "The Five Orange Pips," or "The Norwood Builder," respectively — Holmes, an inveterate practical joker as well as a world-class consulting detective, knew that such suggestions were incorrect.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Add to this Holmes's delight in fooling others with his various disguises, and we find a wonderfully mischievous sense of humor beneath the logical exterior. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><h3 style="clear: both; Perhaps their older brothers had a hand in it at home. Or time  in the army (for Watson) or at university.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Needless to say, they each were men of the time and partook in various tobacco types when we knew them. Whether Holmes with his disputatious clay pipe [COPP] or Watson with his cigarettes from Bradley's in Oxford Street [HOUN].</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Might they have picked up the habit at Baker Street Elementary? Cringy, even.</p><p><br /></p><p>But it set the stage for what was to come, not only in nearly <a href="https://ihose.co/ihoseshows" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">300 episodes since then</a>, but in our companion show <b><i><a href="https://www.episodes.fm/1198869691" target="_blank">Trifles</a></i></b> and in numerous other Sherlock Holmes podcasts started by other passionate Sherlockians.</p><p>In Episode 289 of IHOSE, our special correspondent Madeline Quiñones will begin a segment called "A Chance of Listening," a series of short assessments of many of these Sherlock Holmes podcasts that have sprouted up since those early days of 2007. It was inspired by her presentation at the Dayton conference. Not only did he provide us with narratives of many of Sherlock Holmes's cases, but he stood in for us as well — an everyman.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Red-Headed League," Watson tells us: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote>“I trust that I am not more dense than my neighbours, but I was always oppressed with a sense of my own stupidity in my dealings with Sherlock Holmes.”</blockquote></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Who can blame him? There's Holmes, making a complex mathematical calculation on a moving train in "Silver Blaze." Or nonchalantly describing the details of a roomful of murderers in "The Resident Patient."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">When Holmes rattles off a very detailed description of Henry Baker in "The Blue Carbuncle," Watson admits: </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I have no doubt that I am very stupid, but I must confess that I am unable to follow you.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It's a perfectly natural reaction to being around a genius. By comparison, even a highly intelligent person might seem less than average. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But while Watson may have told us of his stupidity, he was, after all, a medical man, which required a degree of intelligence. And certainly emotional intelligence, as Watson was compassionate and self-aware.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Sherlock Holmes himself knew something of stupidity — particularly how to feign it to get results. Consider how he deliberately misstated the color of the <i>Aurora</i> to trick Mrs. Smith into giving him the proper colors. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Ah! She’s not that old green launch with a yellow line, very broad in the beam?”</div></blockquote><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“No, indeed. She’s as trim a little thing as any on the river. She’s been fresh painted, black with two red streaks.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">How fortunate we are that night Watson nor Holmes was actually stupid. For one, it allowed him an unfettered path to pursue his own inquiries. We were 13 years past "The Cardboard Box," the final episode in the Granada Sherlock Holmes series, made popular in part by Jeremy Brett in the starring role. And it was three years before <i>Sherlock</i> with Benedict Cumberbatch would debut, and five years before <i>Elementary</i> with Jonny Lee Miller would make its first appearance. </div><div><br /></div><div>The talk of the town in 2007 was a potential movie project dreamt up by former Warner Bros. producer Lionel Wigram, who had been working on a concept for about 10 years. In March, Warner Bros. finally committed to the idea and the project was announced.</div><div><br /></div><div>But who would they seek to don the deerstalker in this iconic role? What Hollywood star would have the screen presence combined with an ability to draw box office audiences?</div><div><br /></div><div>Speculation had already surfaced on some entertainment news sites and discussion forums that Russell Crowe was a candidate. Many in the Sherlockian community wrinkled their noses at such a ridiculous miscasting. Crowe was hardly the right type for Holmes.</div><div><br /></div><div>Who might be a better candidate?</div><div><br /></div><div>We immediately thought back to 1985 and Nicholas Rowe in his appearance in <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i>. But we were operating on the bleeding edge of things, and aside from a link at the bottom of the story alerting readers <a href="https://hoaxes.org/aprilfool/" target="_blank">to background info</a> and the date of the byline, there was nothing to indicate foul play was afoot.</div><div><br /></div><div>Well, the public ate it up and for a brief moment, <i>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</i> became a source for Hollywood news. </div><div><br /></div><div>We <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/04/had-fooled-us-3gar_2.html" target="_blank">came clean</a> the following day, revealing the hoax.</div><div><br /></div><div>And Robert Downey, Jr. went on to be selected to play the role in the Guy Richie-directed <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> (2009) and sequel <i>Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows</i> (2011), both of which were global box office smash hits, raking in over $500 million each.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Be careful what you read out there on April Fool's Day.
