In "The Greek Interpreter," Mycroft Holmes makes this observation about an answer to an advertisement:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Here it is, written with a J pen on royal cream paper by a middle-aged man with a weak constitution.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In the Victorian era, the 'J' pen nib was the standard writing-nib used on a daily basis. The J nib is a simple, robust nib with a rounded point. Few in his situation would have known that a goose's crop would be the perfect receptacle for temporary storage of a gemstone.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Yet, James Ryder was nowhere near as knowledgeable a fowl handler as his sister, Maggie Oakshott. If he were, he would have known that chickens and turkeys possess crops, but geese do not.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"A goose has no crop," Miss Mildred Sammons stated in a letter to the "Line o' Type or Two" column of the <i>Chicago Tribune</i> on December 27, 1946. Dr. Jay Finley Christ, to whom the letter had been addressed, noted, </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"Mildred Sammons' announcement in the Line of Dec. 26 that 'a goose has no crop' produced a considerable shock among Sherlock Holmes experts. Consultation of one ornithologist, two zoologists, and three poultry dressers, together with ocular demonstration, made it abundantly clear that the lady is correct. Holmes made an alimentary error, which the Baker Street Irregulars should have noted long ago."</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Peter Blau, BSI ("Black Peter") in <i>More Leaves from the Copper Beeches</i> (1976) made the only logical conclusion:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"The matter of geese's crops is really beside the point...if we assume that the Blue Carbuncle was not found in the goose's crop at all, and that the long debate has actually centered on a printer's error, which substituted an <i><b>o</b></i> for Watson's <i><b>a</b></i>."</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">One wonders how the tale might have turned out differently if Mrs. Oakshott raised chickens, ducks, or turkeys. Or makes an excuse if he can't properly divine information from meager clues at hand.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And yet, that is exactly the position Watson placed him in when he tested Holmes's powers in the opening of <i>The Sign of Four</i>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Handing Holmes a pocket watch, Watson asks him for his “opinion upon the character or habits of the late owner,” who happens to be, unknown to Sherlock Holmes, Watson's own brother.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And in doing so, Watson admits to setting a trap for Holmes:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I handed him over the watch with some slight feeling of amusement in my heart, for the test was, as I thought, an impossible one, and I intended it as a lesson against the somewhat dogmatic tone which he occasionally assumed.” </div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Holmes quickly surveyed the watch and gave this excuse: “The watch has been recently cleaned, which robs me of my most suggestive facts.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In his mind, Watson took the victory lap:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“In my heart I accused my companion of putting forward a most lame and impotent excuse to cover his failure. What data could he expect from an uncleaned watch?”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">However, the excuse submitted by Holmes was unnecessary, as he was able to discern a good number of facts about the watch's owner, who happened to be Watson's older brother:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote>“He was a man of untidy habits,—very untidy and careless. He was left with good prospects, but he threw away his chances, lived for some time in poverty with occasional short intervals of prosperity, and finally, taking to drink, he died. Here at <i>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</i>, we recognized the innocence and joy of Baker Street Elementary as a throwback to the Sunday comics of yore, and have featured this strip every other Sunday on this site for the past eight years (along with some related commentary).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Think of what a decade of Holmes and Watson together gave us: the two first met in early 1881 and their exploits included <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, <i>The Sign of Four</i>, the entire collection of <i>The Adventures</i> and <i>The Memoirs</i>, ending only with "death" of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls with Professor Moriarty.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Those tales meant we would encounter a clever female foil for Sherlock Holmes, a client with a severed digit, a scam targeted at a man with red hair, a snake as a murder weapon, short hair and a blue dress as a requirement for employment, a disappearing horse, a murderous pygmy, an travel-worn American set on vengeance, and a number of past acquaintances whose reappearance meant death.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This was just the beginning of a 40-year journey. Will Baker Street Elementary have the same longevity? The type of wood mattered too; oak and ash were preferred for their mystical qualities.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Interestingly, in Bram Stoker's <i>Dracula</i>, the Count wasn't defeated with a stake through his heart. Oftentimes, the sentiment was “<i>I come to you as a last resource</i>,” as Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope explained.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">How appropriate was her surname? By the end of the story, Holmes located the document, saving the career of the cabinet secretary and restoring hope in his wife.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Most cases begin with a severe sense of hopelessness or pessimism, Clients arrive, convinced that there is only one man in all of England who can help, as they dolefully present their woeful problems. And yet, the Sherlock Holmes stories are filled with hope and optimism.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Bruce-Partington Plans," for example, there is more at stake than the missing plans of a submarine. Violet Westbury, fiancée of the dead suspect Arthur Cadogan West, implore Sherlock Holmes, </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Oh, Mr. Holmes, if you could only, only save his honour! It was so much to him.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And in clearing up the mystery, Holmes provides comfort for those involved, as he does in so many other cases.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Finding the treasure (although losing it in the Thames) in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, he brings closure for Mary Morstan and a marital prospect for Dr. Watson. Holmes is able to vanquish the family curse in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, leaving the young baronet to make a life for himself.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Here are just a handful of examples of optimism: Henry Baker's hat and goose are restored and James Ryder is given a second chance [BLUE]; a terrible secret is exposed and a young family reconnected [YELL]; the shame and fear of a son's illness are wiped away with an alternative diagnosis [BLAN]; a problem child is exiled and there is a chance to repair a failed marriage [PRIO]; we could even make the case that an inherited medical practice following a murder means rosier times ahead for the physician [RESI].</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Was Sherlock Holmes a pessimist or an optimist? Some might call him a realist. But, capitalizing on the misfortunes of others, maybe he was more of an opportunist. Sherlock Holmes didn't spend much time on those topics either, aside from representing the government in a handful of cases, handling a case for the pope, having a rusty memory of the Old Testament, and one well-known reverie.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But there was one story in which Sherlock Holmes dealt with both politics <b><i>and</i></b> religion.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Naval Treaty," Holmes was engaged by Percy Phelps, who had a position at the Foreign Office, thanks to his uncle, Lord Holdhurst. On Phelps's watch, a treaty between England and Italy that defined the Triple Alliance, went missing. While it was a matter of personal and professional interest to Phelps, there were political implications if the treaty were put on the open market. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In that very same story one of the most beautiful passages in the Canon has Sherlock Holmes contemplating a rose and the creator:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion,” said he, leaning with his back against the shutters. “Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers.
